MOTIVES
The revolts led by Francisco Dagohoy and Diego Silang were some of the significant uprisings against Spanish Colonial Rule in the Philippines during the 18th century. Dagohoy’s 85-year rebellion in Bohol began with a personal grievance over the unjust refusal to bury his brother which sparked a larger fight against Spanish exploitation and oppression. Meanwhile, Diego Silang's revolt in Ilocos was fueled by the instability of the British occupation of Manila, which he saw as an opportunity to challenge Spanish authority and strive for an independent Ilocano nation.
Dagohoy’s rebellion in Bohol lasted for 85 years, demonstrating the persistent and determined resistance of the Boholanos against Spanish rule. This long-standing revolt became a symbol of the strong desire for freedom among Filipinos. In contrast, Diego Silang’s revolt in Ilocos ended with his assassination, but his legacy lived on through his wife, Gabriela Silang. She courageously continued the fight as a general, leading the resistance against the Spanish until her eventual capture and execution. Gabriela’s bravery ensured that their struggle would be remembered as a powerful example of their determination and strong will to fight back for what is truly theirs.
