Frequently Asked Questions:
I have never played before can I tryout: Yes most athletes will be new to field hockey their freshman year.
I will be missing all of pre-season can I still tryout? Its possible but not guaranteed. Priority is given to players who can make all of pre-season. We cap our teams at 18-22 players so as to maximize practice and playing time. Some years we can have a later tryout for a player if we have not filled a team but this is not guaranteed.
I will be missing 1-3 days of preseason can I still tryout: Yes. Though we encourage players to attend all of pre-season.
Do I need to buy a stick? No we let new players use a stick their first year. Returning players should purchase a stick prior to August tryouts (if possible). Please consult with coaches prior to purchasing a stick.
What gear do I need? Players will need to purchase a mouth-guard for tryouts and wear shin guards if they have them (soccer shin guards are fine for tryouts only). After tryouts player will need to purchase field hockey shin guards.
Are their player fees for DHS sports. No their are not but our program is run entirely on donations (and some fundraising). So we do request that families donate to the program in the Fall.
Varsity or JV: Freshman-Seniors can play Varsity. Freshman- Juniors can play JV. Athletes with hockey experience are encouraged to tryout for varsity if they think they are ready.
I heard their is a lot of travel and missed classes. We do travel more in our league then some sport. Our athletes have always been able to handle missing classes and getting make-up work. The teachers are also used to it. Freshman should consider having your 7th period class PE or something less academic if possible.
Can Juniors Play JV: Yes
Can a Sophomore who did not play last year tryout for JV? Yes
I play club sports (soccer, lax, swim, softball, etc.) or other activities can I still play field hockey? Yes we love having athletes that play other sports. We will work with you on your schedule as needed.
Is there a club team in the off season: Yes D-City Field Hockey club plays in the Spring for 6-12th Graders
