I vividly remember the day . . . the day when, despite my training and experience, I recognized I was not fully equipped to handle the full scope of leadership challenges presented as a Superintendent. I had all of the career steps to get there -- I spent time as a classroom teacher, a building administrator, and a district administrator. I had three college degrees. But somehow there were still some gaps in what I was able to do.
I found myself at this career junction where I was telling myself "I was not enough" on repeat. I wasn't brave enough, I wasn't smart enough, and I wasn't courageous enough to tackle the battles that sat in front of me. But over time I have realized that being in the arena and giving it your all is a trait that my leadership colleagues across this country share. But none of us are Superman or Superwoman. We each have skills, strengths, talents, wisdom, and experiences. But we also have fears, unknown elements, and experiences we have never prepared for.
When I stepped away from the Superintendency in 2021 I was eager to put my skills and experiences to work to serve others. Like many I have walked down some long windy, and bumpy, paths. I do not pretend to have all of the answers, but I know I can help support and grow school leaders, systems, and structures as a resource. None of us are in this work alone, and I am confident that a partnership with DJM Education Consulting will benefit your district, staff, students, and community.
