We tested on Unit 1 in math on Tuesday, October 13. Students should have brought home their tests with a proficiency sheet attached today. Our second math unit will focus on decimals. Students have been reviewing place value to help them compare and order decimals. We will also be adding and subtracting decimals and learning about the associative, commutative, and distributive properties.
In science, we will be finishing our unit on the Scientific Method. A couple of weeks ago, students took a test on steps 1–4. We are now working on creating graphs and interpreting data. Students will be tested on these skills in the next couple of weeks. After finishing this unit, we will move into our first Twig book, which focuses on matter. We will also learn about different forms of energy, including thermal, sound, kinetic, and potential energy.
We just finished our first reading unit and took our unit test last week. Students will bring home their test results on Friday. We began Unit 3 today!
Students will be working on writing a narrative.
In social studies, students are learning about different Native American groups around the world.

The first unit in math has been focusing on fractions. We have been learning about unit and equivalent fractions, how to simplify fractions, and how to convert improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa. You will notice that when your child brings home an independent practice sheet, the front of the sheet will focus on the skill for the day, while the back of the sheet will review previously learned concepts. We are also working on refreshing our multiplication and division skills. Students knowing their multiplication and division facts is a vital part of success. Throughout this year, we will constantly be using our knowledge of multiplication and division. Knowing these facts will greatly help students be successful.
In science, we have been learning about the Scientific Method, which includes the steps someone takes when conducting an experiment. This process allows for consistency when performing an experiment. The saying “Quickly Run Home Eating Donuts and Cider” will help us remember each of these steps. We have already learned about asking questions and conducting research as part of the Scientific Method. We are ready to learn about making a hypothesis and conducting a valid experiment. We will have a test before MEA break.
In social studies, students have taken their first test. Students should be sharing their results later this week.
In ELA, students are beginning work on writing a five-paragraph essay about our trip to Pioneer Days.
We are also beginning to read and discuss various selections in the Wonders reading series. We are working on reading skills such as cause and effect, summarizing, and plot.
