Animal Hybrid

Today we are going to create an animal hybrid using two different photographs of two different animals. The goal of this lesson is to use Photoshop to create the illusion of a new animal specie.

Follow the steps on this sheet to create your animal hybrid.


Step 1: Go to Chrome. Find two different photographs of two different animals. Make sure they are pointed in the same direction. CLICK ON the image in GOOGLE IMAGES. (DO NOT DOWNLOAD THUMBNAILS!) Click, Drag, Drop onto the desktop.

Step 2: Next, open Photoshop. FILE→ OPEN each of your pictures.

Step 3: WINDOW→ ARRANGE → TWO UP VERTICAL

Step 4: Click on the LASSO TOOL ( press L on your keyboard) and trace around the head of one of your photographs.

Step 5: Click on the MOVE TOOL (arrow in toolbar) . Drag the head portion to the other photograph you have opened on your computer.

Step 6: Next, hold down COMMAND + T and resize the head portion to fit the body. Press RETURN.

Step 7: Use your eraser tool to smooth out the edge of your head portion. (Click on the blur edge eraser type. You may also need to change the size)

Step 8: Next, hold COMMAND + T→ Let go. Then hold doen CONTROL + click with your mouse. (Right click)

Click on WARP. Drag the points on the grid to contour the head portion to the body portion. Press ENTER on your keyboard when your are done.

Step 9: Next, click on the word LAYER at the top of your screen. Click FLATTEN IMAGE.

Step 10: Go to the LAYER WINDOW>Click the lock on the background layer.

Step 11:

  • Click on the Filter> Filter Gallery> A window will open pop up. Open the folders and see if there is a filter that you would like to add to our picture. Click .OK

Step 12: Add Text!

Click on the T tool in your tool bar. Pick a font. Click and drag a text box on your your picture. Type a name for your Animal Hybrid.


Step 13: File-->EXPORT--> Quick Export --> Save to Desktop.

  1. Process: Describe in detail the steps you took to create your picture. What type of images did you have to find? What tools did you use in Photoshop? What type of images did you have to find ? What type of filters did you use?


2. Creativity: Describe why you chose the two animals. What makes your picture unique or different? ( Make sure you tell the name of your animal and how you came up with it.)


3. Connection: What do you like about this project? What is one thing you wish you would have done better?
