NHM Walk-A-Thon

Samantha L. 7th Grade

The NHM Panthers Walk-a-thon went great. Everything went according to plan. While doing the Walk-a-thon I decided to interview people I also heard comments about the Walk-at-hon that kept repeating. Many students were saying that it was cold and they wished that it could have been on a warmer day. Many students were appreciative that we got water bottles. One student said “ It’s a bit chilly but that is good because it’s nice to run in the cool weather. Otherwise I think it was nice to take a break from school work and be able to socialize with friends.” Another student I interviewed said “ Today went great. It was a perfect day to do the Walk-a-thon. Getting water bottles was nice, I like getting two free periods to de-stress myself.” There was music playing the whole Walk-a-thon and, you also got one third of a mile each lap you went that goes towards your Fit for Life.Great job Panthers! As a school we raised a total of $3,298.51! Thanks to all the teachers hard work of setting up we had a successful Walk-a-thon. Also Thank you to all of the students who donated you help the school. The fundraising money goes towards field trips, specials events, field day and you also won various of prizes based on how much money you raised.

The History of Thanksgiving

Jackson G., 7th Grade

As many of you know, Thanksgiving was hosted by the Pilgrims by inviting the Natives to celebrate, but you may not know some surprising facts. This is where the facts will be brought into the light and you will walk away from this article knowing more than you did.

You all know that one of the most important things to people about Thanksgiving is the big bird that will end up on your plate, and I’m not talking about the Sesame Street character. Well back when the Pilgrims held the first Thanksgiving, they didn’t have the turkey. Believe it or not the one thing that we love about Thanksgiving wasn’t there for the first ever one. What they had instead was venison (deer), ham, and lobster. Thought you heard enough back there when I talked about the turkey? Well they also had swans and seal at the Thanksgiving dinner. There were cranberries served at the first thanksgiving but it wasn’t just in the cranberry sauce. It was in dishes to add bitterness.

Even though there were a lot of differences from the first Thanksgiving, the message hasn't changed. To give thanks for being more fortunate than some of the other people in the world and to give respect to those who have helped you in your journey.

Did you know that the first Thanksgiving lasted 3 days? Or that Thanksgiving didn’t become a national holiday till over 200 years after the first Thanksgiving? How about that the first Thanksgiving was eaten with only knives and spoons. There were no forks! Another fun fact is that Thanksgiving is the reason we haves TV dinners. Finally Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird.

Hurricane Michael

Christopher V. 6th Grade

Hurricane Michael was a devastating problem. There was a total of 18 deaths and it made a total of 8 billion dollars in damage. It was very devastating because hospitals had to evacuate patients that were in bad condition. Then lots of houses were lifted up and one that really caught the news people attention was a house and it was lifted and it was dragged on the street. The president went to go see the destruction of Hurricane Michael. It is sad because the animals and people are still in the destruction and they cant get out. People are trying to help. Try and donate to any place that will help the people that are in the shelters.

Hurricane Florence

Peyton B. & Reegan C. 6th Grade

Have you ever been in a bad storm or flood? Since Hurricane Florence hit, it has caused more than one million people to evacuate. It has slowed down since its original form which was a category four. It has almost been the worst hurricane, ever than Hurricane Katrina. Almost 42 deaths have been pronounced. This is a terrible storm, We don't exactly how many people were stranded. Hurricane Florence was horrible, and we are thankful that it is over.

Chicago Bulls Game Experience

Nicola K., 6th Grade

The Chicago Bulls game on November 10th was a very close one.I went to the game with my family. They were playing the Cleveland Cavaliers. The score was 99 to 98. The Bulls won by 1 POINT!!!! In the 1st quarter the Bulls scored 37 and the Cavs scored 23.In the 2nd quarter the Bulls scored 16 and the Cavs scored 30. In the 3rd quarter the Bulls scored 26 and the Cavs scored 24. And in the last quarter the Bulls scored 20 and the Cavs 21. That game was a very close game.

Chicago Blackhawks

Reegan C. 6th Grade

Who is your favorite Hawks player? Mine are Duncan Keith(#2) and Patrick Kane(#88)The Hawks preseason did not go so well they lost their first two games and they won their last game 5-2. The newly drafted players Jake Wise (#12), Bob Verdi (#1), Niklas Nordgren (#18) seem excited to be Chicago Blackhawks. I don’t know how high the chances of making the team are but I know they will try. On Saturday October 13th the hawks won it O.T. against the St.Louis Blues. That was also Duncan Keith’s 1,000th game. As of November 24th, the Blackhawks' record is 8-10-5.

Chicago Bears

Nicola K. 6th Grade

Do you like football? I am going to tell you about the Bears. I was so glad about the game on Sunday September 30. They won 48-10 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They scored 14 points in the first quarter. The second quarter Tampa Bay scored 3 points and the Bears scored 24 points. The third quarter the bears scored 7 points. And the fourth quarter the bears scored 3 points and Tampa Bay scored 7 points. So if you do the math the Bears had 48 points in total and Tampa Bay scored 10.They won by 38 points. And then the game on October 14 I got so mad. They were versing the Miami Dolphins. In the first quarter the Dolphins scored 7 points. 2nd quarter no one scored. In the 3rd quarter the Bears scored 21 and the Dolphins scored 6. The 4th quarter the Bears scored 7 and the Dolphins scored 15.And this is when I got mad. They tied 28-28 so they went into over time. The Bears kicked the ball to get 3 points but they missed. And then the Dolphins kicked it for 3 points and of course they had to make it.So the game ended 31-28 Dolphins.I got so mad but I honestly think that Bears are doing much better than they were last year by a whole lot.

Did you see the Bears game on November 4? It was really good! They were playing the Buffalo Bills. The score was 41-9.In the second quarter the bears scored 28 POINTS!!!! In the third quarter each team scored 3 points and in the last quarter. The Bears scored 10 points and the Bills scored 6. That game was very intense. Then there was the game on November 11. The Bears were against the Detroit Lions. The score was 34-22.In the 1st quarter the Bears scored 13.The 2nd quarter the Bears scored 13 and the Lions scored 7 points. In the 3rd quarter the Bears scored 8 and the Lions scored 3.And the last quarter the Bears scored nothing and the Lions scored 12. The Bears played on Thanksgiving against the Minnesota Vikings and won!

Winter Weather

Christopher V., 6th Grade

Tips for staying warm is you can wear a sweater or jacket your choice. You can wear a scarf and you can wear a hat. If it is not cold just in case bring a scarf or a hat . The Farmers Almanac is saying that it will be a teeth chattering winter and it will be very cold during the middle of February. There will be widespread snow showers and it will be above normal precipitation. Hopefully it will snow soon and it will be sticky snow so we can make snowballs, build a fort, and play in the snow. Hopefully we won't have to shovel are driveways, sidewalks, and stairs .

Endangered Animals

Christopher V, 6th Grade

Some animals are endangered from loss of habitat, modern habitat changes, and the big reason they get endangered is from humans .The reason it's people is they get frightened, they sell some of their important parts, and kill them for food.Let's take a look at the red panda. The red panda is is endangered and there are only 10,000 alive. The reason they are endangered is because they do not want to breed because of depression their habitat is getting destroyed and poaching. The red panda are killed for their fur so people can make hats and feather dusters. They are losing their supply of bamboo due to habitat loss. They live in the mountains of Nopal in China.
