Student Attendance Matters: Attendance in 8th grade is a stronger predictor of high school graduation than standardized test scores.
Access Testing: ACCESS testing will begin January 20th and we will be assessing how our multilingual students are growing in their English language proficiency. Each English Language Learner will be taking four exams and they will be assessed on their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Here is a letter for more information. Feel free to reach out to the Main Office if you have any questions.
8th Grade Dance: Calling all 8th grade parents, please complete this Form if you would be willing to assist with our 8th grade Dance on May 26th, from 6-8:30pm.
8th Grade Yearbook Tributes: This year the Yearbook staff is continuing a program only for 8th graders and their families. This program allows families to buy an eighth of a page personal ad in the Yearbook to congratulate their 8th grader on their graduation from West Oak Middle School. All parent tributes are to be submitted by Friday, February 27th, to ensure they will be included in the Yearbook. Here is the document to sign up.
Great Kindness Challenge: The week of January 26-30th, our school will be participating in the Great Kindness Challenge, a global initiative that encourages students and staff to create a culture of kindness through simple, meaningful actions. This year, the theme of the challenge is: Show Us Your Kind! Please review this letter for more information.
2nd Trimester: Our 2nd trimester grading period will be ending on February 6th. For report cards your child's priority standard grades will be converted to a letter grade and they will be sent home electronically on February 13th. Please reach out to Mr. Pedersen, bpedersen@dist76.org, if you have any questions.
Acting Auditions: The Kirk Players are proud to announce the auditions for their upcoming children's show, "Alice in Wonderland"! They are hoping to have West Oak Middle School students try out for this production as two of them were in last spring's show. Please review this flyer for more information.
Illinois Youth Survey: All 8th grade students are asked to participate in a voluntary survey called the Illinois Youth Survey the week of February 2nd. The purpose of this survey is to better understand Illinois youth risk and protective behaviors as they relate to students and their success. Participation will involve completing a survey, with no names or identification numbers, that will be confidentially administered by a classroom teacher. Your child’s participation will last no more than one class period (40-45 minutes). Here is the link to the opt-out website if you would not like your child to take this exam. Let the Main Office know if you would like your child to opt-out of the survey.
Bus Bulletin: Please sign up for bus bulletin notifications through Lakeside Transportation. By doing this, you will be notified if buses are running behind schedule. Click the link here to ensure you know when your bus is running late.
Diamond Awards: New to this year, we ask families to complete this nomination Form if they would like to recognize a staff member they feel are going above and beyond with what they do in the classroom, school, or district.
