The importance of Physical Education goes beyond what you may think or even know. While many still view Physical Education as merely a recess or time for students to blow off some steam, we (physical educators) actually have a platform that allows us to see kids at their best, at their worst and when they are most vulnerable- singled out or performing alone.
Physical Education is not about sports. Physical Education is designed to develop motor skills, knowledge and behaviors that will improve physical activity and physical fitness. It provides physical as well as cognitive challenges for building confidence to be physically active for a lifetime. We are advancing physical involvement of students as well as furthering their understanding of the importance of a physically active lifestyle.
It's not just learning about body systems, body function, and our ability to cope with stress. P.E goes way beyond. In our environment, we can build leadership traits through hard work and accountability and the way we treat each other. We can expose weaknesses of character as well as bad behavior and make an effort to eradicate those. Physical Education is not just about sports or activities- it was never JUST about it. Physical Education is about, acceptability, grit, character building, integrity, respect, hard work, accountability, behavior, gender and racial tolerance, toughness, flexibility, and the ability to deal with different situations as they present themselves.
