The Mariners Soar! After School Program works with DISES and DISHS students in grades 3-12. We strive to create a safe environment during out-of-school hours where DISES and DISHS students are supported by school staff, community partners, and community volunteers in exploring place-based and project-based activities. With activities ranging from academic support, SEL, and mentoring and leadership to STEAM projects, physical activity, visual and performing arts, culinary arts, and more, we are committed to providing programming that meets the developmental needs, strengths, and interests of our students.
Academic Support
We work with your student’s teachers to make sure the programs we offer support classroom learning, while giving the kids new ways to understand and engage the subject matter through contextualized learning. Our program is staffed by educational professionals who are dedicated to sharing the joy of learning with students.
We provide individual or small group tutoring on an as needed basis. The activities we offer are project based and are designed to engage students’ curiosity and interests while providing them with plenty of guidance and support while they spread their wings.
Family and Community Engagement
With the goal of family engagement, we work with our adult education program to give DISES families opportunities to learn and have fun together. We work with community volunteers and community organizations to offer free and accessible programming to students, getting students out into the community, and the community into our school.
Sustainability
Our program started in 2018 with the assistance of a 5-year 21st Century Community Learning Center grant. The 2022-2023 school year will be a year of strengthening family and community partnerships, as we seek to make the program sustainable past the 21st CCLC Grant. We will be concentrating on serving more students and families and creating programming that speaks to the needs and strengths of our student body and local community. As we work to further promote positive youth development, program staff will work closely with our Student Advisory Board to support our students in creating a sustainable youth-driven program, where student voice and choice are centered. Our ultimate goal is to make space and step back as we watch out students soar!
