Direct Recovery Support
Referral Policy
Direct Recovery Support is committed to providing support to individuals seeking recovery. Our staff (to include: contractors, trainers, Peers, and partner organizations) providers often encounter individuals whose needs may fall outside our scope of services. In such cases, a referral to appropriate resources is necessary to ensure they receive the care and assistance required for their recovery journey.
Purpose of Referrals
Referrals to Substance Use Disorder (SUD) services or other resources are essential when there is evidence or concern that an individual’s substance use or social determinants of health are negatively impacting their health, well-being, or daily functioning. The goal of our referral policy is to ensure that individuals receive the specialized care they need while maintaining their dignity and autonomy throughout the process.
Indicators for Referral
Key indicators for referring someone to SUD or other supportive services may include, but are not limited to:
- Persistent substance use that interferes with daily functioning, relationships, or employment.
- Physical or mental health decline associated with substance use.
- Legal or financial issues stemming from substance use or addictive behaviors.
- Client expresses desire or readiness for additional support not provided by Direct Recovery Support.
- Lack of progress in recovery despite engagement with current services.
Referral Process
The referral process at Direct Recovery Support is designed to be client-centered and respectful. When making a referral, the following steps are followed:
1. Client Involvement: Engage the individual in the decision-making process. Ensure they are fully informed of their options and understand the purpose of the referral.
2. Sensitivity and Respect: Approach the situation with empathy, respect for the individual’s autonomy, and an understanding of their unique needs. Avoid pressuring the individual and instead present the referral as a supportive option to enhance their well-being.
3. Resource Identification: Clearly identify appropriate referral options, whether they are SUD services, mental health resources, housing, employment assistance, or other community support. Ensure that the referred services align with the individual’s specific needs and circumstances.
4. Follow-Up: Once a referral is made, maintain appropriate contact with the client to monitor progress, offer continued support, and provide additional resources if needed.
5. Collaboration with Partners: Direct Recovery Support works in collaboration with partner organizations and service providers. Referrals are made to trusted partners to ensure continuity of care.
6. Cultural Competency: Ensure that referrals consider the individual’s cultural background, preferences, and language needs to make sure they feel comfortable and understood in the services they are being referred to.
