Leading God’s People in Hope
Leadership for the 21st Century
When we look at where we are and where we would like to be, there is a gap between the two. In this gap there are technical challenges (things that can be solved with money and expertise) and there are adaptive challenges (things that have no easy or obvious solution). To close the gap, we need leaders equipped to address those adaptive challenges. The church needs adaptive leaders, lay and ordained, equipped to lead in a rapidly changing world, able to respond, adapt, and empower in new ways.
Adaptive leadership is the practice of mobilizing people to tackle tough challenges and thrive.
Adaptive leadership is built on 5 principles:
Leadership is an activity, not a position
Anyone can lead, anytime, anywhere
Leadership starts with you and must engage others
Leadership is risky
Leadership is about our toughest challenges
To be an adaptive leader, you must develop skills in 4 competencies:
Diagnose Situation
Manage Self
Energize Others
Intervene Skillfully
Adaptive leadership can be introduced in a day-long retreat or a series of Zoom sessions. If you would like your vestry or leadership team to learn and grow their adaptive leadership skills, contact the Rev. Kelley Hudlow, Canon for Vocations and Community Engagement.
