Ride The Reading Wave In 3rd Grade

Hello, I am Amanda Hooper-Hill.  I am teaching 3rd grade ELA and Social Studies.  I am a graduate of Elizabeth City State University where I earned a Bachelor of Science degree.  I also received a Master's degree at North Carolina A & T State University.  I am so proud to serve as a teacher here a Dillard Academy Charter School.  My philosophy is based on the love and well being of children.  I plan to be open-minded.  I have a positive attitude which stems from a high tolerance of patience.  I truly believe that every child can learn, and it is my goal to give that opportunity to each and every one of them.  


In Social Studies this 4th 9 weeks, I will be introducing and teaching lessons on "Timelines, Sources, Experiences and Achievements, First Peoples, North Carolina First, Military Service in the Community, Business in the Community, and Community Celebration followed by the year in review.  Below is what we covered during the previous 9 weeks.

1st 9 Weeks  In the first nine weeks, I will be introducing and teaching Developing Inquires, Examining Evidence and Communicating Conclusions, Taking Action, Engage In Your Own Inquiry, Civics and Government, Communities, Government, Important Documents, and Tribal, State and Local Government.

2nd 9 Weeks   In the second nine weeks, I will be introducing and teaching Conflict and Compromise, Citizens, Historical Events, People and Symbols, Map Skills, Themes of Geography, Location, Place: Physical Characteristics, Place: Human Characteristics,

3rd 9 Weeks  During the third nine weeks, I will be introducing and teaching Human-Environment Interaction, Movement, Culture, Resources, Producers and Consumers, Economic Principles, and Personal Finance.



In ELA this 4th 9 weeks, we will be reviewing some strategy lessons to help prepare students for the End of Grade Test.  Students will also continue to become familiar with Key Ideas involving Details in Informational Text and Key Ideals in Literature.  These lessons will cover main idea and key details, cause and effect, how to determine the central message of a text, identifying the meaning of unfamiliar words, and recognizing text features.  I am looking forward to continuing to  work with your child as we prepare for the End of Grade Test.  Below is what we covered during the previous 9 weeks. 

1st 9 Weeks  In the first nine weeks, I will be introducing and  teaching Making  Connections to Literature, Making Connections to Informational Text, Ask and Answer Questions About Key Ideas, Finding Main Ideas and Key Details, Time and Sequence, Describing Cause and Effect, Asking and Answering Questions About Stories, and Describing Characters.

2nd 9 Weeks  In the second nine weeks, I will be introducing and teaching Recounting Stories, Determining the Central Message, Unfamiliar Words, Text Features, Author's Point of View, Words in Context, What Are Stories Made Of, What Are Plays Made Of, and What Are Poems Made Of.

3rd 9 Weeks  During the third nine weeks, I will be introducing and teaching Point of View, Connecting Words and Pictures in Informational Text, Describing How Connections Support Points, Describing How Comparisons Support Points, Comparing and Contrasting Two Texts, Connecting Words and Pictures, and Comparing and Contrasting Stories.
