Dr. Wen Zhang, an Associate Professor of Voice and 8-year Coordinator of Music Program, has been teaching at Dillard University in New Orleans since 2014. She is also a visiting professor at Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Nanjing University of Arts, and Ningbo University in China. Her educational credential includes a DMA degree in voice from the University of Nevada in Las Vegas, an EDM degree in music education from the Teachers College of Columbia University in New York, and an MM degree in vocal performance from the University of Western Ontario in Canada.
Dr. Zhang has two scholarly books published worldwide (in eight languages) and four research articles published in the Journal of Singing and Choral Journal in the United State. Because of her outstanding research, she was invited to present at the International Symposium on the Sociology of Music Education world conferences (East Lansing, U.S.), and the International Society for Music Education World Conference (Beijing, China). In addition, she has been awarded several times by the Faculty/Staff Research Symposium of Dillard University.
As a well-trained singer, Dr. Zhang has performed many times at the Dillard University Christmas concert and the City Holiday Concert in New Orleans. During her singing career years, she performed with several Asian and American opera companies in roles of Suzuki in Madama Butterfly, Carmen and Mercedes in Carmen, Maddalena in Rigoletto, and Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro. Her New York City debut in 2002 with the New York Grand Opera was singing the role of Dame Quickly in Falstaff; and her solo debut in 2009 in Lincoln Center of New York was performing the excerpts from Carmen. Her signature role in Musical Theater is Lady Thiang in The King & I, for which she has performed in more than 700 shows with the National & International Tour Company and regional theaters, and was nominated for the Best Supporting Actress in a Musical for the Carbonell Award.
