What are they known for?
The Vikings are known for many things, including:
Seafaring: Vikings were skilled navigators who travelled the seas and rivers of Europe, reaching faraway civilizations.
Raiding: Vikings are often associated with pillaging and raiding especially of Christian monasteries in Britain.
What was their beliefs?
The Vikings believed that after death, people could go to a range of afterlives, including Valhalla, Folkvangr, Hel, or live on in the Landscape.
They believed that they shared their world with a whole range of gods and mystical creatures.
The Vikings practiced the Old Norse religion, also known as Norse paganism, which was a polytheistic religion with dramatic stories of gods' conflicts and wars.
What did life look like for them?
Life for Vikings was often demanding, but they also found time for joy. Here are some aspects of Viking life below.
Farming
Vikings spent most of their time farming and fishing. They grew crops like wheat, barley, and oats, which they ground into flour for porridge, bread, and ale. They also raised animals like sheep, pigs, cows, and chickens.
Homes
Vikings lived in small villages near the coast and built their homes using wood and stone. These homes were often called longhouses and could house up to 50 people. The curved walls of the longhouses made them look like upside-down ships.
Daily life
Vikings bathed every Saturday, combed their hair daily, and changed their clothes frequently. They also used ear picks to clean their ears.
Jewelry
Jewelry was an important part of Viking life and was used as a form of portable wealth. Men would melt down gold and silver goods into ingots, which they could then smith into rings. Women wore brooches to fasten their dresses, and often hung beads, pendants, keys, and other items from them.
Drinking
Vikings were known for drinking mead. A honey–sweetened alcoholic beverage like beer.
Marriage
In the event of a divorce, a woman would call witnesses to her home and marriage bed to declare her divorce. The marriage contract would usually specify how family property would be divided.
Lifespan
Viking typicall lived to be arand 40 – 50 years old but same upper class viking lived longer.
