The way a classroom is set up and decorated can greatly impact how comfortable and welcome students feel when they are in class. Here are some steps I am taking to ensure that my classroom is inviting to all students:
Desks Arranged in Groups (or tables)
When students sit together in groups, it is easier for them to collaborate, discuss, and share learning and questions with one another. When all students are a part of a group, no one is isolated and expected to learn on their own, apart from others.
I recently made the switch to arrange my desks in small groups to facilitate discussion during "book clubs" in my 8th grade ELA classes, and there is so much more discussion and helping one another than there previously was in my classes. We are all working together!
Student-Created Items Displayed
Proudly displaying student work as well as crafts and items that show their individuality is one of the best ways to show students that they are a valued member of the classroom community. It also boosts their confidence and self-efficacy.
I had my homeroom students decorate paper beans to reflect their personalities, and some artsy students created the backdrop as well as the "Blanchard Beanstalk" for us to hang our beans on. This project brought us together as a class, and I was sure to explain and reiterate the symbolism: we are all different and unique, but we are one community, and we all belong.
Cultural Artifacts Displayed
Students deserve to be told and shown that their culture is valuable and to be appreciated. One way to do this is to display artifacts and items around the room that represent various cultures. Bonus points if the students themselves bring in or create these items!
