The acronym PSEA is often regarded as different meanings by different organisations. Some refer it to as "Prevention" of sexual exploitation and abuse, while others refer it to as "Protection" from sexual exploitation and abuse. However, protection (as understood and referred to in defining PSEA) is an all-encompassing term that speaks to both the ‘prevention of’ and ‘response to’ (sexual exploitation and abuse, in this case). Sexual misconduct can be experienced by anyone, both humanitarian actors and beneficiaries, whether with intent or not. Thus, it is important to understand the concepts and principles of PSEAH and ensure that there is zero tolerance for sexual exploitation and abuse.
The 4 pillars of PSEA Response are: 1) Managing and coordinating SEA prevention with partners and other actors; 2) Engaging with community populations and secure their support by raising PoC awareness of SEA and establishing complaint mechanisms; 3) Developing prevention mechanisms; and 4) Responding by promoting internal complaint and investigation mechanisms.
