Academic year 2017/2018
Lecturer: prof. Angelo Spognardi (spognardi@di.uniroma1.it)
NOTE: for the new academic year (2018/2019), the new lecturer is prof. Emiliano Casalicchio - casalicchio@di.uniroma1.it, please go at https://sites.google.com/di.uniroma1.it/cloudcomputingcourse/
The course will cover the fundamentals of Cloud technology: Storage of large data sets, performance, scalability and reliability. It also will cover the organization of popular public cloud platforms like Google and Amazon EC2, and from a practical point of view one of the most widely used frameworks for designing Cloud applications (e.g. MapReduce). Additionally, we will look into the economics of the Cloud, its impact in the ICT society and in the way computing technology is used in the industry.
We will try to alternate theory with practice, touching with hands the more known and spread tools related to the Cloud technology. For this reason, this will be an "experimental" class: don't be too angry if something goes wrong during our lab sessions... Mistakes make you wiser!
The principles of cloud architecture
Principles of operating systems and virtualization
Computing and storage on the cloud, scalability
Big data and large-scale computations
How to program for the cloud
Cloud-based web services
Security in the cloud
Lectures will be held at Dipartimento di Scienze Statistiche (Main university campus)
Wednesday: 17-19 Room V
Friday: 15-19 Aula Gini first floor (new room!)
There will be two written exams: a midterm and a final term. The final grade will be the average between the two written exams. Students not passing one of the two written exams will have to undergo a full written exam and an optional oral exam.
As for the past years, there is also an optional presentation for students during our Student's Symposium on Cloud Computing, which outcome can make the final grade to raise up to 2 extra points.
Please refer to the Plan for the exam dates.
We will make use of classroom for announcements, discussions and material sharing.
To get the code of the class, please send an email with your @studenti address to the teacher with subject [CC1718] Classroom access request.
