Expedition Section

Your expedition will be led by an external company, Dynamic Adventures https://dynamicadventurescic.co.uk/.

The expedition must meet the minimum hours of planned activity. At each level, you will complete both a practice and qualifying expedition. You need to attend both to have your expedition section signed off.

Bronze: A minimum of 2 days, 1 night; 6 hours planned activity each day.

Silver: A minimum of 3 days, 2 nights; 7 hours planned activity each day.

Gold: A minimum of 4 days, 3 nights; 8 hours planned activity each day.

Bronze teams and direct entrants will have training in school on elements such as first aid, campcraft, kit, and navigation.

Often we are able to offer to take you to and from the expedition in a school minibus. Please complete the google form emailed home if you require this.

Each expedition needs to have a team goal, such as monitoring the mood of the team, or exploring the moors and investigating wildlife, or even taking photos in a silly hat or in a Where's Wally style! As a team you need to choose this for yourselves, and submit a presentation afterwards . At Bronze and Silver this could be a verbal debrief with your assessor and team at the end of the expedition. Gold participants need to submit a short presentation to their DofE manager using dofe@dhsb.org. Ideas can be found here Team Goals - Examples.

Expedition Kit

Please see your Kit List from Dynamic Adventures

School can provide these items: tent, rucksack, trangia/pocket rocket, fuel, compass, map, and first aid kit.

You don't need fancy, expensive kit. A waterproof jacket with a hood and waterproof trousers (ideally both with taped seams) are essential. It is also important that you have good walking boots, that have been broken in so that they are comfortable.

Consider this advice on how to pack a rucksack  .

Your DofE card gives you a discount at many outdoor equipment retailers. This will be sent to you in your Welcome Pack.

Food and Drink

It is a good idea to carry water purification tablets. You could organise this as a group. Water will be provided whenever possible by Dynamic Adventures or be accessible at the campsite.

Some food suggestions are:

Breakfast - breakfast bars, hot drinks, porridge, boil in the bag meal

Lunch - Cold pizza, sandwiches, wraps, crackers, crisps, cake, fruit and nuts, chocolate etc

Dinner - freeze dried meals, boil in the bag, fruit pots, cake and custard, pasta, cured meats, pasta sauce

It is a self-supported expedition where you carry the food yourselves. So lightweight items that don't perish are key. Removing any unnecessary packaging helps to reduce weight and volume. It is also helpful to pack meals in separate labelled bags. It is important to be aware of any food allergies within your team especially if you share food/utensils.

Aim to cook a hot meal at least once a day, and hot drinks are a great idea too.
