Don't lose all the great new reading skills that you gained this year! Practice over the summer!
Here's how:
Add to your summer fun by reading in all of these places! Take pictures and send your photos to Mrs. Hesterman at: lhesterman@dg58.org.
How many of these can you complete? Who will do the most? I can't wait to see your summer reading adventures! Each photo sent to Mrs. Hesterman will be an entry into a raffle for a fun prize in the fall.
Tips for Family Summer Reading!
ALL reading is good reading! Especially in the summer!
Let Them Choose: study after study has found kids read more when they have the chance to choose their own books. Rereading! Graphic Novels! Picture Books!
Create a library routine: You don’t have to own hundreds of books. The library is all about low cost, high returns. They offer the flexibility of choice and giving kids the freedom to stop and start reading with no pressure gives them the confidence to explore and try new things.
Build a Blanket Fort! Create fun places around your home to read.
Take an audiobook on vacation! It's a great way to bond together as a family. Find free ones with Libby and Hoopla apps from the Downers Grove Public Library.
Never Stop Reading Aloud! Forget the idea that you only read to kids because they can’t read to themselves. Reframe reading as quality time spent together no matter how old they are.
Let Them See You Read: Your example is such a powerful motivator. If want them to read more, read more yourself.
