For nearly 30 years, Robert D. Nelson was the heart of our local dance community. Known to many as the "Coke Guy" from his 29-year career at Coca-Cola, Robert was a visionary leader, a cherished mentor, and a deeply generous friend who built more than just a studio—he built a place to grow. Alongside his long-term partner Adel Husband, Robert gave selflessly of his time, energy, and resources to create an inclusive space where everyone deserved a place to belong. He was famous for offering "buddy deals," letting dancers stay late into the night, and quietly supporting those going through hard times by telling them to "keep your money".
To honor his legacy, Wild Wild Westie is proud to present the Robert D. Nelson Heart of the Community Award. We are seeking nominees from the West Coast Swing community who embody Robert’s steady presence, joy, and rare ability to connect, uplift, and build a lasting community.
