Welcome to our Springhurst Elementary Library!
Our library is an inviting space featuring an extensive collection of both fiction and non-fiction materials for student exploration. Students attend library sessions once every six days, for forty minutes, in alignment with other special area classes. Our library provides spaces for students and teachers to listen to stories, read quietly, browse our collection of over 9,000 books, or engage in games such as checkers or Guess Who? Occasionally, we have on a live animal cam to observe wildlife, such as bears in Alaska, eagles in West Virginia, or the fascinating Coral Reef of Australia. Each year our students will have multiple opportunities to make suggestions to enhance and develop our book collection. Student interest and choice are a top priority when ordering our titles.
Our primary objective within the library is to foster a love of learning, cultivate curiosity, and encourage collaboration among students through books, discussions, and diverse experiences.
Curious individuals actively seek information!
Policies:
Springhurst students typically borrow books from the library on their designated library day. To promote independent learning and optimal circulation, the library is available to all students for book exchanges, even on non-assigned days, with prior consent from their classroom teacher. This initiative aims to alleviate the pressure of remembering books on a particular day.
Students in Kindergarten and First Grade are permitted to check out one book during their library visits. Please establish a routine to ensure that borrowed books are returned to the school on or before their scheduled library day.
Beginning in November, students in Second Grade may check out two books. It is our belief that second-grade students have become accustomed to library routines by the middle of the first semester and are prepared for expanded reading opportunities.
Students in Grades Three, Four and Five are permitted to check out two books during each library visit.
Book care:
Our library has a lot of popular books that don’t spend much time on our shelves. To keep them in great condition, we’d really appreciate it if you could remind your child to take good care of the books while they’re out on loan. We know accidents happen like books getting wet, written on, chewed, or even falling apart. If that happens, no worries! The replacement fee for lost or damaged books is $10, or you can buy a copy of the same book yourself and send that back to our library.
