The UN Decade for Ocean Science
and Sustainable Development
Launched by the United Nations last 01 January 2021 (A/RES/72/73), UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, or the “Ocean Decade” is a global effort to translate ocean knowledge into greater benefits for both humanity and the planet. Aside from seeking to know more about the health of our oceans and what can be done to preserve, maintain and optimize it, The Decade also seeks to catalyze the human behavioral change required for the successful implementation of these solutions.
The Ocean Decade offers a great opportunity for oceanography to put in place a more complete and sustainable observing system, and to feed the resulting data into a science-based ocean management system satisfying the increasing reliance of our civilization on the ocean, its ecosystem services, while at the same time preserving the health of our oceans.
