Forging Excellence Through Synergy
On 18 February 2023, the Philippine Embassy, together with the Filipino community, Malaysian artists, students, and guests, installed a 75-feet-long mural in the Embassy grounds with the theme “Forging Excellence through Synergy”, in celebration of National Arts Month.
The participants, led by Malaysia-based Filipina artist Anna Karina Jardin, showed a strong sense of community in depicting Philippine and Malaysian elements in the colorful wall, such as the flags of both countries, national flowers (hibiscus and sampaguita), birds (rhino hornbill and Philippine eagle), iconic landmarks (Petronas twin towers and the Rizal monument), batik and traditional Filipino textile patterns.
In the unveiling of the mural, Ambassador Charles C. Jose imparted inspiring words to the participants. He said, "It is not just a work of art, but a labor of love". The collaborative artwork shall remain a testament to the friendship forged between the Philippines and Malaysia, and will be a feature wall in the Embassy’s Chancery in the years to come.
INTO THE LIGHT I
BY FRANK CAÑA
A “symbol of hope”, is what the light or sun shining wishes to evoke in Caña’s Into the Light. In that, whatever hardships come today, the sun will still be rising tomorrow and that while success is elusive to some, hope shines on everyone.
BONDING
BY FRANK CAÑA
Bonding captures the beauty, uniqueness, and tranquility of the moment between two women (likely, sisters) walking peacefully side-by-side, in a garden in Langkawi. Like his other works, the artist displays kaleidoscopic (from the combination of Greek words ‘kalós’ and ‘eidos’ which means beautiful and shape, respectively) formations of beautiful shapes and figures.
LUZVIMINDA
BY PANCHO PIANO, SAUDI AHMAD, KRISTINA MANANSALA,
AUGUSTO SANTIAGO, AND ROY ESPINOSA
The artists rendered representations from the three major islands of the Philippines namely, Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. From the known landmarks, destinations and iconic objects such as the rice terraces, Luneta Park, and the jeepney in Luzon to the colorful vintas and stilts of Mindanao, the art work is a well-compressed depiction of Philippine culture in a nutshell.
Despite the different styles and approach of each artist, the outcome looked cohesive and appeared complementary side by side.
BLUE SERIES
BY ROY ESPINOSA
Blue illustrates the universal colour of creativity and the spirit, according to Roy Espinosa, as it symbolizes the dynamic duality of calmness and passion, stillness and compulsion, and peace and zeal.
In his Blue Series, he highlighted the ethical character of abstracted lines by accentuating its tactile qualities. Multiple spatial depths are implied through the layering of variant-sized geometric shapes functioning as translucent backdrops and creating a prismic effect. At the center of the composition is a galaxy of exploding colours fluidly applied and positioned in a diagonal trajectory to illustrate kinetic movement. The evocative handling of the pigments projected precision in utilizing textural densities and tonal modulations, resulting in a symphonic universe of shapes, lines, and hues.
