18 SEPTEMBER 2025, VIENNA - Philippine initiatives to engage the youth in nuclear science took the spotlight at the 69th International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference (GC). Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Undersecretary Maridon O. Sahagun presented impactful projects designed to inspire the next generation to pursue careers in nuclear science and technology.
Speaking at a side event titled “Shaping the Future: Empowering Women and Youth in Nuclear Science Across Africa and Asia Through Competitions”, held at the 69th IAEA GC from 15–19 September 2025 at the Vienna International Centre, Undersecretary Sahagun highlighted the Philippines’ experience in hosting the first International Nuclear Science Olympiad (INSO) 2024 in Clark and in developing the country’s own Philippine Nuclear Science Olympiad (PNSO). “The PNSO, held regularly in the Philippines, is a strong initiative in engaging students in the STEM (Science, Technology and Math) programs of various secondary schools to pursue further studies in the nuclear science field. Competitions are powerful means to empower the youth and women”, said Undersecretary Sahagun. She also mentioned other youth-focused projects of the DOST such as the NuLab STEM in Motion, Youth Summer Camp, Radyo Eskwela and other initiatives for the country’s promotion of science and technology.
The initiatives form a tangible part of the Philippines’ overall steadfast commitment to empowering the youth as key partners in advancing nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation, and the peaceful uses of atomic energy. END,
