11 September 2026, Vienna - The Philippines highlighted national achievements and regional cooperation in advancing nuclear safety, nuclear security, and peaceful uses of nuclear technology during the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors meeting from 07 to 11 September 2026 in Vienna, Austria.

Ambassador and Permanent Representative Evangelina A. Bernas shared the Philippines’ initiatives as Chair of the ASEAN Network of Regulatory Bodies on Atomic Energy (ASEANTOM) this year, including the hosting of the 13th Annual Meeting of ASEANTOM from 11 to 13 August 2026 in Manila, as well as the conduct of the ASEAN Nuclear Emergency Notification and Communications Exercise (AR/NeX 2026). 

She emphasized the importance of regional cooperation among regulatory bodies. “The Philippines stresses the importance of regional cooperation as nuclear and radiological risks require coordination across national borders particularly in emergency notification, radioactive material security, and regulatory preparedness,” Ambassador Bernas said.

The Philippines recognized IAEA’s essential role in supporting Member States harness the benefits of nuclear technology through the Agency’s research and development, capacity building, and technology transfer for both power and non-power applications. 

The Philippines thanked the Agency for its support in developing national expertise, enhancing coordination among relevant institutions, and promoting exchange of knowledge and best practices. As the Philippines embarks on the development of its nuclear energy program, it considers the Agency’s assistance invaluable in developing the necessary infrastructure, legal systems, and human resources for the country’s nuclear energy program.
