Igorot Austria demonstrating the “Panagtalon,” a dance celebrating the traditional rice farming method of the Cordillera. It shows all the steps of rice cultivation from planting to harvest, and remains an important part of Igorot life.
2 February 2025. Around 500 guests delighted in the traditional song and dance of the Igorot during the very first Panagbenga Festival at the Hall of Columns of the Weltmuseum in Vienna. Austrians and tourists gamely joined the community dance and rituals of the representatives of the Cordillera people who wore traditional garb during the festival to usher in the Lunar New Year.
The Igorot Association in Austria presented a showcase of Igorot culture, presenting traditional clothing from the 6 provinces of the Cordillera region of the Philippines. This was followed by the traditional community rites Begnas, Takik, and Basket dances and singing “Salidummay” accompanied by traditional gongs and drums. The performances emphasized the central role and value of community in traditional life and the responsibility carried by each member of the village in their shared livelihood, which continues to this day.
The Panagbenga Festival was organized by the Philippine Embassy in Vienna together with the Weltmuseum and the Weltmuseum Wien Friends. Weltmuseum Interim Director Dr. Bettina Zorn and Deputy Head of Mission and Consul General Zoilo Velasco opened the Festival. END.
