Meet Mrs. Nickerson

I LOVE:

  • My husband, Kyle, and 1-year old son, Warren
  • Learning new things
  • Reading all kinds of books - my favorite genres are historic fiction, realistic fiction, and nonfiction
  • Using technology to explore and create
  • Getting outdoors (hiking, backpacking, canoeing, and camping)
  • Being creative (knitting, drawing, sewing, cross-stitching)
  • Cooking foods from around the world
  • Birds! If I wasn't a teacher, I'd be an ornithologist
  • The mountains of Colorado, where part of my family is from

MY LEARNING:

  • I went to Vanderbilt University and double-majored in Elementary Education and Natural Sciences
  • I got my master's degree from Central Michigan University in Educational Technology
  • I am always learning more about teaching, technology, and working with students by reading, researching, and from other teachers!
  • I teach other teachers at conferences like miGoogle and the University of Michigan's 4T Virtual Conference

FUN FACTS:

  • I was a director of Outdoor Education at YMCA Storer Camps for 5 years before coming to Dexter
  • I taught 6th grade for 4 years at Creekside, and was Dexter Schools' Technology Coach for 3 years
  • I was a college mascot (Go Commodores!) and won two collegiate mascot championships
  • I play the banjo, ukulele, and guitar well enough to play kids' songs, but that's about it!
  • I developed Creekside's 6th grade "Winter Survival Day" program
