Married Words

What are Married Words?

Married words are way to study tricky vocabulary by associating it, automatically, with another word. Playing games, like Kaboom!, is a great way for children to learn these high frequency words. This game gives children the opportunity to read their high frequency words in an exciting and fun way with their friends and family.

Kaboom instructions:

(Put each bolded word on a popsicle stick or piece of paper. On 2-4 other sticks/papers put in the word KABOOM!. Mix them all together in a container and you are ready to play!)

  1. Make sure all sticks or papers are in the container and mixed well. You will take turns checking the other players answers.

  2. To begin the game, the tallest student (or whoever you choose) pulls out a popsicle stick. The student identifies the “answer” (associated married word). Another student will check answer using chart.

  3. If their answer is correct, then they get to keep the popsicle stick. If they answer it incorrectly, the stick must go back in the cup.

  4. The students continue around the circle, selecting one popsicle stick at a time and stating the married word(s).

  5. Any student who pulls a KABOOM! stick has to place ALL of their popsicle sticks they have accumulated back into the cup, leaving them with zero.

  6. The game ends when time is called by your teacher. Keep going because you never know who will get “Kaboomed”!

  7. The person with the most sticks at the end of time wins! Everyone wins by practicing your vocabulary!!!
