Nico Boon’s PhD started out as an investigation into the legacy of the well-made play – a type of playwriting that originated in the 19th century and that is defined by plot progression, climax-oriented scenes, strategic revelations, dramatic conflict, causality, realism, and a tight-knit structure typically organised in acts. Soon, however, his research morphed into a more paradoxical, ambiguous, and tentative inquiry.

The Shapeshifter: The Well-Made Play Not Written All Over Again is the result of that more serpentine exploration. It focuses on playwriting as a practice of continuous improvisation, in which chance, rhythmic intuitions, auditory awareness, anarchic impulses, shapeshifting, and experimenting are more important than focusing on fixed narrative structures, or a clear ‘sense’, or distinct boundaries. Ultimately, Boon views playwriting as a transgressive enterprise – belonging to what Derrida called poematic language and characterised by zigzag movements – that always refuses to choose a definitive form.

Met destructuur gaan theatermakers Aline Nuyens, Ellis Meeusen, Nico Boon, Rosa Vandervost, Runa Robbroeckx en Sander Salden met elkaar een structurele samenwerking aan. Dit kan resulteren in het dramaturgisch, scenografisch of praktisch ondersteunen van elkaars werk of het volledig samen en horizontaal ontwikkelen van nieuwe voorstellingen.

Ze vertrekken vanuit hun gedeelde fascinatie voor taal en het verhaal om theater te maken waarin de intermenselijke connectie centraal staat.
