Visualizing Our School's Carbon Footprint
As part of the STEM Digital Design Class ISK HS students have been collecting data on ISK's carbon footprint and offsets. Raising awareness about areas outside the "scope" of the orginal audit through data visualizations and infographics.

Looking at Trees on Campus and Tree Planting to Offset Emissions
How much carbon can ISK offset using Trees. ISK Design and Environmental System students have been calculating the carbon sequestration potential of our trees on campus as well as the potential for offsetting our carbon emissions through off-campus tree planting initiates. Looking at the data the newly panted trees on campus (community forest) and recent tree planting initiatives outside campus make up more than half of the "ISK Trees". However because if the lower sequestration potential of young tree and the unknown survival rate of trees planted off campus the fully grown trees on campus have by far the largest carbon reduction potential.
At the moment this data is still vague and based on estimates, however, as we gather more data about specific tree species and actual survival rates of our off campus trees we hope to improve the algorithms to give us more accurate information. An important aspect to note is that while it represents the smallest reduction at the moment the only realistic growth area for carbon reduction through trees are our off campus initiatives.

The ISK Carbon Neutral Alliance has chosen to support the Merewe Forest Restoration and Biodiversity Conservation Project in Baringo County. After carefully considering different environmental projects around Kenya the Merewe project was selected. The organization has proven itself, they have a long-term vision and plan that we support, and ISK already has a long relationship with the area being reforested through the Kembu IC trip allowing ISK students to take part directly in monitoring and evaluation.

To mark Kenya’s National Tree Planting Day on November 13th, students in ISK’s Carbon Neutral Alliance (CNA) explored alternative offsetting schemes for 2023/4 and voted for ISK to partner with LEAF (the Little Environmental Action Foundation) with whom we planted over 1000 mangroves last year) and Mwere Farm in El Dama Ravine, Baringo County. Both these projects engage local communities in strategic tree-planting schemes to protect vital ecosystems. In addition, in order to capitalize on the current heavy rains (El Nino), students bought 5600 indigenous tree seedlings to add to our existing ISK tree nursery. CNA is providing cedar seedlings for free to ISK staff to honor their hard work, encourage tree planting in our community, and help offset our campus carbon emissions. Seedlings can be collected from the greenhouse area (follow the QR code instructions at the site) starting on Monday of next week. These mature, indigenous seedlings include endangered and protected African cedar trees, which are hardier than exotics such as eucalyptus. Please note that each person can collect a maximum of ten seedlings per day. For ISK community members, cedar seedlings are 100 ksh while other seedlings are 400 ksh. Cedar seedlings are cheaper, which encourages replanting to sustain and replenish their endangered population. If you are able to make a donation to CNA’s sustainability initiatives that include promoting biodiversity and supporting Kenyan communities, the mpesa details are on the seedling collection and tracking form (again accessible from the QR code). Please email Mr. Wallbridge (twallbridge@isk.ack.ke) or Mr. Sudra (msudra@isk.ac.ke) for more information on how to participate in our seedling sale and help reforest our community.

All the 5600 mature seedlings were picked up by ISK staff and community members before the Christmas holidays. Looking at the data collected the vast majority of the trees were picked up by local teaching staff and planted on private plots/farms outside Nairobi. We look forward to tracking the success of these trees over the coming years!

Merewe Nursery donated 200 indigenous tree seedlings as well as sacks of Podocaropus, Cedar, Toddalia Asiatica, and Pittosporum Viridiflorum to kickstart the ISK nursery. We are extremely grateful for the donation and we are happy to report that we have + 1000 seedlings growing in three locations on campus ready for the next tree planting drive.
Making the connection through ISK IC Trips
For Earth Day 2024, ASB and Students for the Environment have organized a paper recycling system for the high school. We are reusing A4 paper boxes as recycling bins in the high school classrooms. Once recycling bins are filled with paper, they will be brought to room M4 for collection. SFE is collecting this paper to deliver to NEMA women's group in Tsavo. The group makes paper out of elephant dung to support their local community. The paper will be taken to Tsavo during next year's IC trips where students will have the opportunity to learn about NEMA women's group and deliver the recycled paper.
