The self described poet, writer, and dreamer Amanda Gormon was the 2021 Inaguaration’s Poet Laureate. From Los Angeles, California, the twenty two year old poet delivered her own poem, The Hill We Climb at the event. Gorman is the youngest poet to perform at an inauguration in the history of the United States. Looking into her past, Gormon began writing at an early age to cope with her speech impediment; almost fitting as the newly sworn in President, Joe Biden, also has a speech impediment. After finding writing as an outlet for herself, she joined WriteGirl, a nonprofit organization centered in LA dedicated to teaching young women to express their voices in creative writing. WriteGirl connects young girls with woman writers and offers personal mentoring to teach techniques. The nonprofit boasts that since 2001, all of their graduating seniors have entered college, with many receiving scholarships. Armed with this program behind her, Amanda Gordon was revered as the Youth Poet Laureate of Los Angeles at the young age of sixteen. Later, she was named the nation’s first National Youth Poet Laureate while studying at Harvard. The Nation Youth Poet Laureate Program is dedicated to showcasing and celebrating the nation’s top youth poets. How was Amanda Gormon chosen to have the honor of being the poet laureate? Well it was thanks to First Lady Dr. Jill Biden. The First Lady had seen Gormon give a reading at the Library of Congress. Upon hearing of this opportunity in December, she had been writing a poem for this event. She had finished writing her piece on January 6th, the day of the capital riot. She drew inspiration form previous leaders, like the reverend Martin Luther King Jr. and spoke to previous inauguration poets. Elizabeth Alexander and Richard Blanco each gave their own advice to the young poet, claiming that she was not alone, and that she was representing American Poetry as a whole. Gormon’s poem, The Hill We Climb, looks on Democracy as a whole and the polarization of our nation. She writes of how we’re trying to destroy our nation more than we are trying to fix it; how we are destroying our country in an attempt to impede democracy. Gormon claims that democracy may be slowed, but it will never be stopped. Whether or not the election had the outcome you had hoped for, Amanda Gormon’s words still hold meaning. We all should not attempt to destroy our nation in the name of reformation, rather we should strengthen out nation in the name of democracy and patriotism.
