With Homecoming dance coming up on the 26th, girls across the campus will begin to buy dresses and wait for that special someone to ask them to be their date to the dance, mostly likely with a Dollar Tree poster board and some donuts. One of the most crucial points of the magical evening is the restaurant where the night starts off. High school students lack the funding for the black-tie steakhouses, but for those who prefer something more posh than the local Red Robin, some trendy restaurants in the Valley are well-priced, as well as locally owned and operated. Eating locally not only helps our economy but also supports local businesses against mega-corporations, who are slowly taking over small-town charm across the country. With these five trendy restaurants, here are local options that won’t break the bank, whether you’re taking out a significant other or a crowd of friends.
Owned and operated by a local Palm Desert High School family, Thai Smile offers a picture-perfect Asian dining experience. Located on El Paseo in Palm Desert, Thai Smile provides an upscale feel at a less-than-upscale price. With both personal options and dishes for two, this restaurant also has decor allowing for those Instagram moments many require. The simple yet elegant interior provides a classic, elegant look that adds to the overall dining experience. Entrees ranging from $10-15 allows for many with lower budgets to afford a classy meal while supporting an Aztec family; Thai Smile is owned by the Creighton family of PDHS.
For a high-class meal with a touch of Europe, the French Corner Cafe is for those looking for a more elegant date spot, with classic French cuisine and, of course, that sophisticated aesthetic. The quaint environment is perfect for the couple seeking somewhere small and quiet place to enjoy each other's company. Costing about $20-24 an entree, this date spot is a little pricer than some options, but the cost of the meal comes with the ambiance of truly being in France.
A cross between a classic steakhouse and a down-home BBQ joint makes Jackalope Ranch a lively, fun spot. This is a great place for a group of friends looking for a good meal to share. With delicious complimentary cornbread and great service, the staff makes Jackalope Ranch feel traditional, but the food makes it upscale. Luckily, their weekend happy hour makes appetizers and entrees no more than about $12 a dish, with generous portions. Their location in La Quinta, off Highway 111 and Jefferson, also has a large outdoor dining area, complete with a large waterfall. The landscape is beautiful and a great place to get those photos for Instagram.
With multiple locations in the Valley and familiar dish options, Mario’s brings that traditional Italian-American cuisine that will remind you of your childhood. From the red-and-white gingham tablecloths to the bottle of Chianti on the table, Mario’s can give you and your Homecoming date that Lady and the Tramp energy. The Frank Sinatra playing in the background completes the classic Italian restaurant ambiance. With dishes ranging from $10-20, it is a great option for both the lightest of eaters and those who will want to order seconds. As proud supporters of the Aztec football team as well, Mario’s has been serving the valley since 1972 and will continue to serve good food with the support of locals.
Finally, Fresh Agave is a local take on Mexican cuisine that will start any night off right. From classic carnitas to ceviche to homemade chicharrones, this restaurant offers vibrant food at reasonable prices. Ranging from $10-20 a plate, not including happy hour prices, this local spot offers a great date night experience. With its signature bright blue interior, the welcoming and fun environment will create a great date and overall dining experience.
