As Coronavirus cases increase, many sporting events are getting cancelled. The BNP Paribas Open is one of these events. The tournament was originally scheduled to take place during March, but has been postponed to late 2021. Other tournaments remain set on schedule for now. Even though the Paribas is not considered a Grand Slam tournament, it is still a very important one for the players. Players who were supposed to appear in the tournament this year will likely appear in the Miami Open, which is scheduled for later this year. Bigger tournaments are predicted to be held if the current situation with the pandemic decreases even slightly. Tournaments like Wimbledon, Australian Open, and the U.S Open have been moved to later dates in the year by a couple weeks, some even months. Many fans are also unhappy with the tournament being cancelled, being that it was also cancelled last year during March, which is when the pandemic first hit hard in the United States. Tennis officials also say that the tournament may be moved to a different location if it is going to be played. Players are also upset with the postponement because the Coachella Valley is a popular travel spot during the spring, making the Paribas a main attraction. Overall, the pandemic is shutting down major sporting events and many people are upset with it. If the cases go down in certain locations, many sporting events may be able to open up again.
