Love him or hate him, Justin Bieber has become one of the most influential pop icons of the 21st century. From being discovered as a young child star, to now being married and releasing his newest album Changes, Bieber has grown up before the whole world to see. His evolution both physically and musically has happened before our own eyes. His career can be designated into about four eras: young Bieber, which goes from around 2009 to around 2011, Believe era Bieber from 2012-2014, early adulthood Bieber, and current Bieber. Bieber came onto the scene in 2009 with his debut album My World, kicking off the era of young Bieber. The young Bieber era was characterized by his very high, early teenage voice and signature haircut took the world by storm. Bangers like “One Less Lonely Girl”, “Never Say Never”, and one of the most iconic songs of all time, “Baby” all came out of this era. However, in 2012, everything changed. Justin Bieber’s voice dropped, he cut his hair, and released his album Believe, featuring even more hits like “Boyfriend”, “As Long as You Love Me”, and “Beauty and a Beat”. During this era, it was the best of both worlds. He could still hit those high notes that he did in the early days of his career, but his more matured voice allowed for his music to become more dynamic. His Christmas album, Under the Mistletoe led by his single also titled “Mistletoe” was also released during this era. Unfortunately, Bieber was going through a lot of personal struggles and mental health issues at this time, even getting arrested for a DUI in 2014. He started trying to turn things around in the next era as he grew into adulthood. This was when people started to take him a little more seriously as a musician, and not just a teenage heartthrob. His songs “What Do You Mean” and “Sorry”, off the album Purpose, topped the charts in 2015, diving into more mature and real themes than ever before. It was quite clear to the public though that he was going through a lot mentally at the time. After the release of the album, Bieber took a 5-year hiatus. In this time, he collaborated with other artists being featured on various tracks such as Post Malone’s “Forever” and Ed Sheeran’s “I Don’t Care”. As he tried his best to stay out of the limelight and focus on himself, he fell in love with his now-wife, Hailey Baldwin, and seems very happy with her. In 2020, Bieber came back with a boom releasing his album Changes which delved into his relationship with his wife and how his feelings toward her have changed him for the better. His single off the album “Intentions” peaked at #5 on the Billboard hot 100 and topped the Hip Hop charts in the United States as well as many other countries. He has continued to release singles, collaborating with Chance the Rapper to create “Holy” in September 2018. His whole career came together to create one of his most well-written and heart-wrenching songs, “Lonely” which dives into Bieber’s mental health and the struggles he went through as a child star. Over the years, it has been so powerful and inspiring to see this young artist grow up and see his mistakes before our eyes, and in the end, see a man who has come out stronger.
