On November 6, 2020, a fatal earthquake in Turkey destroyed at least a dozen buildings throughout the coastal city of Izmir. Centered in the Aegean Sea, the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.0 and left over 600 people injured and 24 fatalities. Thankfully, over 1,200 workers, split up into rescue teams, were able to save some survivors even 10 hours after the earthquake hit. Furthermore, this earthquake not only affected the city of Izmir, but other places nearby as well. It has also been reported that cities as far as Istanbul felt the earthquake too. The New York Times reported on the effects the earthquake had on other nearby countries, stating that “In Greece, two teenagers died in Samos when a wall collapsed on them…”. Needless to say, many cities on the coast of the Aegean Sea felt some form of devastation from the earthquake due to its large magnitude. The devastation created was also commonly shared on social media, and many were seen recording and photographing the damage left by the earthquake. Because of the pandemic, residents were also seen with masks on as they ran outside for protection. Many were deeply affected by this major earthquake, but Turkey is doing what they can to clean up their cities and recover from this tragic event. The Turkish government is also working to provide as much help and support they can to their people.
