As residents of our local community, we all have a responsibility to ensure that everyone has access to the resources and services they need to live a fulfilling life. One of the most essential resources for many people is a reliable and accessible public transportation system. Unfortunately, for many members of our community, public transport is not accessible, and this creates a significant barrier to independence, employment, and education. This is evident for people residing in far barangays like Tokwing and Sepung Balaun. In this blog post, we will explore the issue of public transport inaccessibility in Porac, Pampanga and discuss ways we can work together to break down these barriers.
To give a little background, I am someone who personally hears the frustrations of my co-students who live in Porac and it cannot be denied that public transport in their city is a daily hassle and challenge. Since classes end at rush hours, I can only imagine how stressful it is to tend to school works without ample time. There were even times when I was able to finish my work already yet my friends from Porac are only getting home. This may greatly harm their physical and psychological well-being overtime, as backed by various research. This lack of accessibility creates a significant barrier to employment, education, and other important aspects of life.
To address this problem, we proposed Project LAKBAY to ease the public transportation crisis ongoing in the Municipality of Porac. We were encouraged to conceptualize this because we want to provide students with a hassle-free commute. Through this way, worrying if they might still have enough time at home is lessened. Although a small team, we came up with several ways on how we can work together to solve this problem. These include:
Improving public transportation infrastructure to make it more accessible for people with disabilities, older adults, and low-income individuals. This could include things like installing wheelchair ramps, adding more bus stops in rural areas, and equipping buses and trains with accessibility features.
Increasing funding for public transportation, so that more resources are available to improve accessibility and expand service.
Encouraging private transportation providers, such as ride-sharing services, to make their vehicles more accessible and to provide special services for people with disabilities.
Partnering with community organizations, such as disability rights groups and public transportation groups, to raise awareness about public transport inaccessibility and to advocate for change.
Public transport inaccessibility is a significant barrier for many members of our local community. By working together, we can take steps to improve accessibility and break down these barriers. This will not only improve the lives of individuals with disabilities, older adults, and low-income individuals, but it will also improve the overall quality of life for everyone in our community. Let's take action to ensure that everyone has access to the resources they need to live a fulfilling life.
