Before World War II, Western Solana was a vast expanse of wilderness. Settlers coming from Central Luzon and Ilocos Region principally from the provinces of Pangasinan, Pampanga, Nueva Ecija and Ilocos, they are speaking Pangasinense, Pampango,Tagalog and Ilocano dialects. In reach of vacant fertile lands to cultivate, began to occupy positions which could be fit for agricultural activities bringing with them their families and relatives. These families later on scattered in different places, grow in number until they became independent political unit, now called barangays. One of these barangays is Ubong which is predominantly inhabited by Tagalogs. Like the other barangays of Western Solana, barangay Ubong has the historical tale of how it came to be known as “Ubong”
As told by the original settlers just after World War II or in the late 40’s, a group of Ilocanos from Nueva Ecija were looking for suitable place to settle on. After successions the whole of Western Solana, these groups finally decided to settle on a plain but forested area bordering Enrile and Kalinga Apayao particularly with hacienda Bautista. The settlers discussed the area to be appropriate for agriculture hence they slowly cut trees and have cleared land converted to the rice fields.
The area sought to be cleared was heavily forested and was found to be in haven for the wild pigs. As wild pigs were abundant, the settlers then related to people from the neighboring communities that their place of settlements an “Ubong” an Ilocano term for a place where wild pigs habitat. Because original settlers refer to their settlements as “Ubong” and by customary usage by settlers and recognition by neighboring communities, the word “Ubong” was final adopted as the official name of what is known as Barangay Ubong, a community inhabited predominantly by Tagalogs.
