DEPED WINs (WASH in Schools) is a program implemented by the Department of Education in the Philippines to promote access to safe water, improved sanitation, and proper hygiene practices in schools. The program aims to improve the health and well-being of students and teachers, reduce absenteeism, and promote an overall better learning environment.
The program is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on water, sanitation, and hygiene, and it also supports the implementation of the K-12 curriculum in the Philippines. The DEPED WINs program focuses on the following components:
Water supply and quality – ensuring that schools have access to clean and safe water.
Sanitation and hygiene – promoting the use of toilets and handwashing facilities, and providing education on proper hygiene practices.
Solid waste management – promoting waste segregation and disposal in schools.
Health and hygiene education – integrating health and hygiene education in the school curriculum.
The DEPED WINs program is implemented through a multi-sectoral approach, involving the government, private sector, civil society, and local communities. The program is also guided by the principles of gender responsiveness, child protection, and inclusion of learners with disabilities.
