The Impact of Strategic Intervention Materials in Addressing the Least Learned Competency in Grade 7 Science

ABSTRACT
The main purpose of the study was to improve the performance of low performing students on the least mastered competency under the strand Matter of Grade 7-Science for the first quarter of school year 2017-2018 through a Strategic Intervention Material (SIM). Thus, the researcher developed a SIM for Learning Competency S7MT-Ii-6: Investigate properties of Acidic and Basic Mixtures Using Plant Indicators. This study sought to answer the following questions: (1) What is the performance of Grade 7 students in Science during the first quarter of School Year 2017-2018 for the following contents under the strand Matter: (a) ways of acquiring knowledge and solving problems; (b) solutions; (c) substances and mixtures; (d) elements and compounds; (e) acids and bases; and (f) metals and non-metals? (2) What is the level of performance of the Grade 7 students in Science, particularly in the strand Matter, before and after the use of the SIM? (3) Is there a significant difference in the level of performance of Grade 7 students before and after the use of Strategic Intervention Material?
In this study, purposive sampling technique was used in choosing the participants. This also employed a researcher-made SIM which was validated by the Butuan City Division Science Education Program Supervisor, the Science Department Head and a Master Teacher in Science in Butuan City School of Arts and Trades using the criteria on SIM making contests with an evaluation scale in numerical rating and descriptive rating in five-point range. Moreover, a pretest and posttest were administered to the low performing students. The result of the study showed that the developed SIM were found effective as there was an increase in scores of the students after the use of the SIM. There was also a statistically significant difference between the two assessments. Therefore, this study suggests that the developed SIM can be a useful tool in remediating students who performed low in this particular competency.
