Exploring Typhoon Disaster Experiences of Manat Folks: Basis for Risk Reduction Module Contextualization
ABSTRACT Disaster resiliency starting from the local barangays have been found to lack consistency from the planning down to the implementation phase as evident from the experienced extent of hazards. A contextualized module that can assist the locals on how to respond, survive and mitigate from the hazards is yet a work in progress. This study intended to explore the experiences of the locals in the study setting as basis for a contextualized typhoon disaster module. Transcendental phenomenological inquiry that made use of focus group discussion was instrumental in the emergence of themes of this study. On the first typhoon experiences, it emerged that they had experienced traumatic events, had suffered from poor judgment, unexpected hazards, and relied on the Divine Providence. It emerged that thinking positively and acting with optimism helps, being proactive, as well as their active involvement in community-based programs were instrumental for them to rise above the circumstance. Finally, the experienced taught the participants to center actions that will mitigate loses and remain on guard. Implications for review on existing practices and policy were discussed. Ground Zero: The Use of SABeR (Sustainable Alternatives Biodegradable Packaging Regular Inspection) as S.U.P. Waste Regulation Agency
ABSTRACT The Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office reported in December 2019 that there were a total of 200 sacks of single-use plastic waste collected in a span of one month from Mainit National High School. To address the issue, this study was conducted to regulate SUPs on campus by using sustainable alternatives. This is an action research project that employed mixed methods. The instruments used are pre-tests, post-tests, and interviews. Paired T-tests and thematic analysis were used to analyze the data. The data were collected from nine classrooms and offices in both the eighth and ninth grades of Mainit National High School, a public high school in Mainit, Nabunturan, Davao de Oro in S.Y. 2021–2022. Parents’ consent forms were distributed to the parents of Grade 7 students. With p-values of 0.045 and 0.007 from data from two batches of pre-tests and post-tests, the results indicated that SABeR is an effective strategy for reducing single-use plastics in the school. SABeR was shown to be effective in reducing SUP waste in the school as well as inculcating discipline in the practice of waste management among learners. Also, it was found out that teachers’ constant reminders and supervision play an important role in the sustainability of the SABeR in the classrooms. Author/s: Kenneth Moses D. Rivamonte, & Sandy G.
