PESCentral - Project Apple

Project APPLE is a program designed especially for grade 3 learners who might need a little extra help with reading. Its mission is to make reading in English and Filipino super fun and easy, so we can become a total reading superstar!

Guess what? Every quarter, our fantastic teachers will give out special apples to learners who are getting better and better at reading. These apples are like magical badges that show everyone how much you're growing and improving. It's a way to cheer you on and inspire you to keep shining in important skills. So get ready to grab your very own apple and show the world how awesome you are!

Project Apple is a comprehensive educational initiative aimed at assisting learners who face challenges with basic reading skills. The project's primary objective is to achieve a 100% passing rate among Grade 3 pupils for the school year 2022-2023. By focusing on targeted interventions and support, Project Apple aims to significantly decrease the proportion of learners struggling with reading while also reducing the number of students at risk of dropping out.

Early Intervention Programs: Recognizing the importance of early intervention, Project Apple offers specialized programs for learners at risk of falling behind. These programs provide additional support and resources to bridge learning gaps and promote catch-up growth.
Parental Engagement: The project encourages active involvement of parents and caregivers in supporting their child's learning journey. Regular communication channels and resources are provided to foster strong home-school partnerships.

Proficient reading and writing skills are critical to success. If students are not competent readers, they are at risk for academic, behavioral, social and emotional difficulties. Students with reading disabilities have the potential to be unsuccessful academically and socially. (MacInnis, 2004). Children with reading difficulties throughout school and into adulthood, said how embarrassing and devastating it was to read with difficulty in front of peers and teachers, and to demonstrate this weakness on a daily basis. It is clear that this type of failure affects children negatively earlier than we thought. By the end of first grade, children having difficulty learning to read begin to feel less positive about their abilities than when they started school (Reid Lyon, 2003)

Project APPLE is designed to support grade 3 learners who are having difficulties with reading. It aims to improve students' reading comprehension and fluency in both English and Filipino.

Quarterly, the teachers will distribute an apple to learners who are increasing their skills in reading, writing, and numeracy)

Reading Buddy

A struggling reader will be paired with a good reader who will serve as his or her reading buddy.

Teacher Nanay

The school will request assistance from a few volunteer parents who are qualified and willing to tutor struggling readers in reading for a set period of time either at school or at home.

Pull -Out Approach

A different reading teacher will be called in to tutor/coach struggling readers and non-readers outside of their class. The special reading teacher may assign reading-related exercises.

This is being done from 11:00 to 12:00 to enhance the reading skills of the learners. Teachers give reading materials for the pupils to read so they can exercise their writing skills.

DEAR (Drop Everything And Read)

Learners are expected to read any materials or selections before or after class.

5 WOW (Five Words a Week)

Each week, students must search for at least five new terms. To be able to use these words in their own phrases, students will learn how to spell them correctly, learn how to read and pronounce them accurately, and study how to understand what these words mean.

Read Aloud

Every day before classes begin, learners will be invited to read aloud a brief paragraph to practice their oral reading skills.

Word Wall

A list of words will be posted on one side of the wall inside the classroom for the learners to read and master.

Word Master

Pupils will be provided with a copy of the Basic Sight Words and Talasalitaan sa Unang Kita for them to master. Basic Sight Words and Talasalitaan sa Unang Kita may also be posted in each classroom. The Filipino and English teachers will use the materials for their everyday drills.
