I. SCHOOL PROFILE
OPRRA National High School has a school ID of 303162. It is situated in OPRRA, Kalunasan, Cebu City. OPRRA means Old Philippines Railway Residents’ Association which consists of relocated families from D. Jakosalem Street, Cebu City , Subangdaku, Mandaue City,South Bus Terminal ,Cebu City, Back Pepsi, Mabolo, Cebu City .
A. GEOGRAPHY
The OPRRA NATIONAL High School Day and Night Department is using the old buildings of OPRRA Elementary School situated at Barangay Kalunasan.
It started its existence in June 1995 through the efforts of Hon. Narciso Duaso, a former barangay councilor, Chairman on Committee on Education, with the approval of City Councilor Hon. Augustus “Joy” Young.
Kalunasan, a name given to the barangay by Spanish colonizers, is formed from the word “Lunas” which means a kind of thorn less bamboo thriving in the area at that time. Barangay Kalunasan is consist of 36 sitios, namely: OPRRA, Sobusteha, Kalubihan, Langub, Banika, Santicon, Balisong, Pangpang Langub, Pagtambayayong, Arriola, Lower Kalunasan, Upper Kalunasan, Laya, Kinasang – an, Awihaw, Upper Kamparang, Lower Kamparang, Kan – ungo, Hagemit, Dap – dap, Tagaytay, Sima, Hilogtog, Santolan, Kabungol, Tiangaw, Ugis, Bakyas, Kumbitayon, Kan – upawan, Putlag Milo, Pinantawan, Tago – on, Mohon, Kanlantaw, and Villa Remedios. Kalunasan is eight (8) kilometers away from the City Hall. Kalunasan Proper is three (3) kilometers away from the Provincial Capitol Building. It is surrounded by five (5) neighboring barangays, namely; Busay to the North, Guadalupe to the Southwest, Sapangdaku to the West, Lahug to the East, and the Capitol Site to the South. Its land area and geographical location make the place suitable for commercial, residential and agricultural purposes. Location: Cebu City South District Land Area: 727 hectares Dominant Source of Income: Agricultural, Residential, and Commercial OPRRA National High School is located by the hillside. It is approximately 100 meters away from the Barangay Hall of Brgy. Kalunasan. The nearest public elementary school is OPRRA Elementary School. It shares a common campus with the latter. The nearest private elementary institution is Lyceum of Cebu. It is seven hundred (700) meters away from the school. The nearest public secondary school is Ramon Duterte Memorial National High School. It is approximately six (6) kilometers away from the school. The school experienced man-made and nature – induced hazards. Burglary is very rampant in our school premises, which happens every semestral breaks, vacation time, and even during weekends. For health threat, few of our students were absent in school due to dengue cases. The school experienced flooding and earthquake.
B. LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
Currently, the school has organized sixteen (16) classes. Out of sixteen classes, only four ( 4 ) with conducive learning environment but the twelve (12 ) classes are using the old and dilapidated building formerly used by OPRRA Elementary School Department .One (1) computer laboratory donated by Ramon Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. ( RAFI )l. On – going construction of a 3 storey – 6 classroom building is in progress funded by the National Government through DPWH as the implementing agency. Due to classroom shortage, the school conducted two (2) shifting of classes. The classroom – learner ratio is 1: 62. Thus, the school needs twelve (12) academic classrooms and four (4) classrooms for Science Laboratory, Audio-Visual, Faculty Room and Administrative Offices. The school has the seat – learner ratio of 1:2. Majority of the students used desks and tables borrowed from the Elementary Department instead of armchairs. The school’s toilet facilities have a separation of gender. The males and females used different toilet. The school’s toilet – learner ratio is 1:86.
We have shortage in instructional materials. Based on the school’s inventory data, there was a shortage of books especially in Math, Grade 7, English, Grade 7 and 8, Science, Grade 7 and 8, MAPEH, Grade 7, ESP, Grade 7 and 9. There are no available books and learning materials for Technology, Livelihood and Entrepreneurship (T.L.E) in all grade levels.
