Civic society groups including Parish Youth Ministry (PYM), Student Catholic Action of the Philippines (SCAP), Tricycle Operators and Drivers’ Association (TODA) of Lopez and The Fraternal Order of Eagle-Philippine Eagle (TFOE-PE) collaborated with ALS learners in the clean-up drive.

Zarah Kristine A. Flores, LWES Bldg. 1 ALS coordinator said that the event aimed to boost the spirit of volunteerism and social harmony in the school by collectively engaging various groups and individuals to organize clean-up activities that will help the school in preparation for the progressive phase of limited face-to-face classes.

“This practice not only forms strong partnership but emphasizes the goodwill created by the community's collective involvement in bayanihan”, Flores explained.

Minor repairs, repainting, and landscaping were some of the activities included in the project participated in by the said non-government organizations' volunteers.

The three-day activity aimed to make parents aware about the salient features in D.O. No. 17, s. 2022 and provide an avenue for exchange of thoughts between school and parents relative to the conduct of face-to-face classes next school year.

At the outset, Mrs. Mary Rose O. Capistrano and Ms. Nichole Ricohermoso, masters of ceremonies welcomed the parents and briefed about the objectives of the program. Capistrano added that the activity was scheduled by grade to follow health protocols being imposed by IATF while Ricohermoso informed the parents that during the three-day orientation, the resource persons will deliver lectures related to progressive expansion of limited face-to-face classes.

Addressing the attendees, Mr. Jose Dakila Folloso, PTA president gave emphasis on the effects of COVID-19 to everyday life of Lopezeños. Folloso advised the parents to take care of themselves and get vaccinated to protect themselves against COVID-19, help end the pandemic and stop new variants emerging. “Nalagpasan po natin ang COVID-19 kaya gamitin natin ito para sa paggabay at pag-alalay sa mga bata. Alam ko pong may takot tayo sa nakaraan ngunit kailangang harapin sa puso at isipan natin”, he said. He also reported that only 58% of the population in Lopez were fully vaccinated. He stressed on the need and importance of vaccines to fight COVID-19. He likewise applauded other parents who are not afraid to take all COVID-19 vaccines including a booster dose. “Tanggalin po natin ang takot sa pagbabakuna sapagkat ligtas ito”, he added.

In her message, Dr. Lorenza Hazel T. Ruiz, principal III highlighted the importance of teamwork. “Kilala n’yo po ba si Helen Keller? Isa po siyang American writer-activist na nagsabing, “Alone we can do little but together we can do so much”, kaya napakahalaga pong nagtutulungan tayo para sa pagbubukas ng klase. We are conducting this orientation so that you as parents can make an informed decision whether to allow your children to participate in the limited in-person classes”, she said. Ruiz also informed the parents that the tentative opening of classes next school year is on August 22, 2022. She also updated them about the plans of having a Grand Alumni event to help the school in all the programs being presented. “Salamat po sa patuloy ninyong pagsuporta sa ating mga programa at nais ko rin pong ipabatid na pinaplano na po namin ang pagkakaroon ng alumni homecoming. Isasagawa po namin ang pagpupulong sa ika-8 ng Hunyo katulong ang ating PTA Officers, she added.

Meanwhile, Mr. Armando Ortiz, SDRRM coordinator shared the responsibilities of school relative to disaster risk management. Ortiz presented the organizational chart to the parents to make them acquainted with the contact persons in case of emergency.

Mrs. Olivia C. Ruzol, school health coordinator gave an awareness lecture on school safety assessment. Ruzol sensitized the school’s needs relative to the expansion of progressive limited face-to-face classes. She mentioned that triage area, isolation area, and school clinic were the three most important health facilities that the school should prepare. She also discussed the classroom set-up during face-to-face classes while Mrs. Jovy Ofrecio, SBFP coordinator informed the parents about the importance of feeding program. Ofrecio emphasized that feeding helps learners rise above poverty. “ Ang feeding program rin po ay tumutugon o tumutulong maging responsible ang mga mag-aaral. Mayroon po tayong 383 recipients ng feeding at magsisimula pong muli ito sa sa Lunes, June 6”, she said.

An audio visual presentation about face-to-face simulation activity of school and Paalala sa Ligtas na Balik-Eskuwela were presented to parents. Dr. Ruiz reminded them about the IEC materials that they need to fill out while presentation of class programs by Mrs. Arlene Balmeo, grade leader of grade four teachers and Mrs. Lorelyn Masaganda, grade leader of grade five teachers followed.

To hear the thoughts and concerns of parents, an open forum was facilitated. In an interview, Mr. Tomasito Salumbides, a grandfather of grade four learner shared his thoughts about the activity. “Unang-una, bilang lolo ay excited po ako kasi babalik na naman ang aking apo sa eskuwelahan at makikita na naman niya ang mga kaklase at kaniyang mga teachers. At ngayon pa nga lang po ay kinukulit na niya ako kasi maliit na raw ang kaniyang uniporme at papagawa na daw po siya ng bago’, he explained. He also said that he supports the implementation of face-to-face classes next school year.

“Go Bags” from Mayor Rachel A. Ubana containing health and emergency kits were awarded to the three lucky parents who attended the meeting. The orientation activity was attended by 445 parents in total.

In the Division Level ranking, LWD ranked 4th in the first category these competitors won and 5th in the second, paving their way for the 5th place in the overall rank.

Before joining the contest, Mrs. Harrieth H. Sarcino, the leader of the team, told to LWES Bldg. I teachers during the flag raising ceremony that joining in the contest was just an opportunity and winning would be a ‘bonus’.

In an interview, Sarcino said, “Yes, we are now enjoying such bonus. I think this success happened because of the support extended by our District Supervisor Meilani L. Adan, Principal-in-Charge of Kindergarten Arline A. Samson, LWES Bldg. I Principal III Lorenza Hazel T. Ruiz, and of course of good teamwork evident among Kindergarten Teachers, contestants, and technical team”.

Rechel Buag, winner of KSP:BLAZER Read-Aloud for Parent’s Category, did her best by varying her voice as she was telling the story of Barumbadong Bus (written by its book author, Rene O. Villanueva), to Maryam Tagulinao, Kindergarten pupil. The Lopez West Team, composed of Harrieth H. Sarcino, April Joy B. Valencia, Mark Patricks Verdera and Amer Rumarate, did the polishing of this video entry.

Athena Dela Calzada, Kindergarten- Headstart, 2nd placer in KSP:BLAZER Retelling (Pupils’ Category) Congressional level and 5th Place for Division level, captured the attention of the audience by showing her enthusiasm and excellence in retelling the story “Monica Dalosdalos” (written by L.E Antonio and P.T. Martin) while Harrieth H. Sarcino, Maria Gemmalyn T. Ibanez, Maria Fe V. Escobanas and Johnedel Sevilla did the refinement of the material.

Ionalyn C. Cacho who obtained 3rd place for KSP:BLAZER Best Portfolio (Pupils’ Category) compiled her reading templates, pictures and props in gathering her artifacts for the program with the support of her Mommy Lynle, Kindergarten teachers - Harrieth H. Sarcino, Maria Fe V. Escobanas, and Maria Gemmalyn T. Ibanez, and Grade I teacher - Grace V. Arguelles to finish Ionalyn’s portfolio.

As team leader, Sarcino mentioned that the team did the proper planning, series of orientations, meetings and consultations, and utilized the ADDIE Model (Analyze the learning needs, Design and Develop the solution, Implement the solution, and Evaluate its success in meeting the learning needs) to ensure the winnability of entries.

“I could say that Mrs. Sarcino, together with her colleagues, gave her best in leading this program. She conducted an action research entitled “Assessing the Impact of KSP: BLAZER (Kindergarten Storytelling Program: Building Learners’ Authentic Zeal of Excellence in Reading) on the Reading Skills Development of Kindergarten Learners in Lopez West Elementary School Bldg. 1” whose results prove that the program has great positive impact in developing learners’ genuine love for reading. I think it contributed also in enhancing the contestants’ skills in the categories they competed in, resulting to winning satisfying awards,” Dr. Ruiz said in an interview.

The program was in accordance with Division Memorandum 61 s. 2022 entitled Planning Workshop of TWG of Division Online Monitoring and Enhancement of Parents Storytelling KSAS: KSP Initiatives that began its implementation in February and ended in May. However, the team encourages the LWD teachers and parents to continuously implement it to further develop a genuine love for reading among LWD learners and experience the joy and benefits that it offers.
