BRIEF HISTORY OF LABANGAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Written by Ellen J. Jayoma
Labangal National High School was created in 1993 that served as a bulwark against illiteracy. It paved the way to the progress and development of the community as well. Its success story had been subtly knitted through the concerted efforts of its proficient and competent founder, MILA B. EUGENIO and the invaluable commitment and support of the constituents of Barangay Labangal led by Brgy. Capt. Avelino Flores, the DECS officials with the leadership of the Schools Superintendent, Gloria T. Obenza, the local officials spearheaded by the Antoninos, Hon. Mayor Adelbert W. Antonino and the Hon. Cong. Luwalhati R. Antonino and many other civic-minded and social- spirited individuals.
On February 19,1993, Labangal High School marked its conception when the Federation of Purok Presidents was organized and the Interim PTCA officials were elected. Thirty nine (39) Resolutions were drafted requesting the creation of the school. In 1994, House Bill 8303 was passed thereby creating the school into a National High School.
This 14,494 sq. m. area with Title No. P 57148 was purchased through the office of the Congresswoman funded by the Countryside Development Fund (CDF). On March 15, 1993, the cornerstone laying ceremony was held.
The Opening of classes in June 1993 was a great excitement to the first seventeen (17) LSB teachers headed by Mila B. Eugenio, and Six Hundred Thirty Eight (638) students comprising 1st and 2nd Year levels only. The ten (10) makeshift rooms constructed with a Bayanihan spirit led by the Interim PTCA President Melecio Dable were once the symbolical legacy of the school’s humble beginning. The school, during its first year of operation, had remarkable achievements both in academic and extra-curricular activities. The 1st batch of graduates had achieved greater heights since many were employed locally, nationally and even internationally. The school from then on had grown remarkably in terms of its student and teacher population and its physical aspect.
Ma’am Eugenio’s major accomplishment was the establishment of the three (3) annexes namely Paopao High School, Ligaya High School and Upper Labay High School in 2001 – 2004 respectively. Mila B. Eugenio had served the school for fifteen (15) years.
In June 2008, PHOEBE B. CAYSIDO assumed office as the new School Head whose biggest accomplishment was the putting up of a library and the acquisition of library equipment and books thru the International Container & Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI), Manila in partnership with the South Cotabato Integrated Ports Services, Inc. (SCIPSI) General Santos City.
LUZVIMINDA R. LORENO, Ed. D. succeeded Ma’am Caysido on January 16, 2011. The school had 58 teachers including the non-teaching/ administrative nationally-paid personnel and staff. Ma’am Loreno’s time gave birth to the different programs of the school such as the Special Program in the Arts & Sports and Science, SPED, and Open High School. He has served the school for only one year as she is promoted to Education Program Supervisor for Research, Guidance and Evaluation
MARILYN T. AVANCEÑA succeeded Ma’am Loreno in 2012. The school’s population has grown remarkably due to Special Programs offered which led to hiring of more teachers. Students’ population raised to more than 2,000. New classrooms were put up donated by the Congressional office and the National Government. K-12 Curriculum has just started during her administration and all other special programs were still on the go. Early implementation of Senior High School was also one of the programs created with 13 graduates in 2016-17.
In 2014- 2015, LAILA L. JUBELAG was then the Assistant to the Principal followed by
MYLENE S. ARZADON who took over the position in 2016- 2018 since Mrs. Jubelag was assigned then to another school. The administration had a challenging endeavor in terms of the early implementation of the Senior High School during the 5 - year administration of Marilyn T. Avancena.
The ICTSI/ SCIPSI, the constant supportive stakeholder of the school has put up a mini- hotel and donated varied accessories and equipment for housekeeping and Home Economics courses for Junior & Senior High School.
In November 2017, there was again a change of administration. NORMA E. PASCUA was installed into office. Her administration started with a physical make over specifically in the school premises through intensified beautification and cleanliness. This school year (2017-18) marks the Silver Anniversary of Labangal National High School. This year also marks the graduation of the first Batch of the K-12 Curriculum. The senior high school building was also put up in 2017.
RONALD T. VISAYA took over the position of Mylene S. Arzadon in July 2018 since the latter was transferred to another school. He assisted in the physical make- up of the school and had left a legacy with his wall paintings at heroes’ park, flagpole and covered court areas for he is skillful in the arts. He was transferred to another school as principal in 2019.
During this administration, there were several projects launched such as the renovation of the mini- hotel, kitchen laboratory with an array of different kinds of equipment for Cookery course and Home Economics offered in both Junior and Senior High Schools donated by the International Container & Terminal Services Foundation and the South Cotabato Integrated Ports & Services, Inc. (ICTS & SCIPSI). The barangay also donated the ALS building through the efforts of Punong Barangay Lorelie G. Pacquiao. However, it was not utilized due to the COVID19 pandemic that hit many countries in the world in 2019.
With the COVID19 pandemic in December 2019, drastic changes happened brought about by this health threat. The Department of Education declared the early school year end in February 2020. Face to face classes were suspended in SY 2020- 2021 and the school shifted to Modular Distance Learning (MDL) Modality that started in October 2020 to July 2021. Later, the school has become a COVID19 facility in the middle of the year that made the faculty and staff and the administration to move to a temporary occupancy at Saway Saavedra Central Elementary School.
MYRNA S. LLOREN, Ph. D. was assigned then as Assistant Principal in January 2021 during the last year of the administration of Norma E. Pascua and had served also for only two months during the next administration because she died on November 22, 2021.
MA. THERESA P. DINERO, Ph. D. took over in September 13, 2021 as principal after more than four (4) years of administration of Norma E. Pascua who was promoted to Education Supervisor in Filipino (EPS- Filipino). Modular Distance Learning continued as the COVID19 pandemic was still on. The new administration’s initial move was the construction of the steel gate at the side of the school covered court and galvanized iron walls purposely for usage of the school personnel in case of urgent need to get some important documents at the Principal’s and the records offices. It was also proposed as temporary place for the administration and staff.
In January 2022, EDDIE H. ATAY, Ph. D. took over the assistant principal position who is also the assigned Division Radio Based (RBI) Coordinator.
