Guba National High School is the biggest barrio school in the Northern mountain areas of Cebu City.
The School started as a private academy in 1971. The name then was ARIAS ACADEMY which was founded by Mr. Jose Arias, the school registrar of the University of San Carlos. The school being founded was affiliated to USC for the reason that the founder has been connected to this school.
Arias Academy was then the only high school in this area of the City. The school gave services to Barangays Guba, Adlaon, Paril, Cambinocot, Sirao, Agsungot, and Mabini.
The academy started with 45 students with a monthly tuition fee of Php 11.00/month and will increase by Php 1.00 every succeeding year. There were 21 students who first graduated in the academy. These students are now in the teaching force of the school.
The academy held operation for more or less 18 years. With the existence of barangay high schools in the neighboring barrios, the academy has decreased population. The reduction of its population forced the owner to sell the academy to the government of Cebu City.
In 1989, the school was sold to Cebu City Government for Php 200,000.00 inclusive of buildings, lots, and franchise. At that time there were only two buildings. One is a two-storey building and the other one is a one-storey building. Today, these buildings were replaced by new and concrete edifices.
It was in 1993 when the school gained its independent status. It was no longer connected to Adlaon National High School. Operated under special orders that separate its operation from its mother school. It was named then GUBA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL.
Today, the school has 3 major two-storey buildings and a newly built three-storey Senior High School Building. It is located in a lot measuring 3,211 sq.m. The school was located just 50 meters away from the main road. It is composed of 23 teaching personnel and one non-teaching personnel.
