Gamut National High School is situated at Purok 8, Gamut, Barobo, Surigao del Sur with School EBEIS ID 304888. The school is about 22 kilometers away from the district office.
The school started to exist in 1974 as barangay high school which had an initial enrolment of eighty (80) first year students thru the initiative of the late Restituta I. Plaza.
Years after, enrolment increased which simultaneously made the first graduates in the school year 1978-1979 with leadership of the Head Teacher, the late Felicisimo Madera. For them to uplift the school physical and teachers standards and status the school authorities filed an appeal in the conversion of the school from Gamut Barangay High School (GBHS) to Surigao del Sur Institute of Fisheries and Aquaculture (SSIFA) at Gamut, Barobo, Surigao del Sur a satellite of Lianga, Surigao del Sur as its main campus in 1984 thru the effort of the TIC Mr. Joel D. Ganancias, now the retired teacher.Since the late Barangay Captain Gabriel M. Guingue was aware of the urgent needs for the education of children and for the enhancement of teachers` status. In 1985, by virtue of R.A. No. 627 authorized by Assemblyman Jose G. Puyat, Jr., the school was converted into Surigao del Sur Polytechnic College (SSPC) Lianga Campus at Gamut, Barobo, Surigao del Sur with its acquired school site of 4.9 hectares thru donation of the Late Manuel G. Sabatin and Amistry Guingue and Canote V. Guingue.
However, R.A. No. 5642 ordered the phasing out of non-laboratory schools supervised by Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and be turned over to the Department of Education (DepEd). Being aware of these changes, the Barangay and PTA Officials made a joint resolution strongly recommending on the immediate adaption of renaming the school to Gamut National High School (GNHS), Gamut, Barobo, Surigao del Sur. This has caused great advantage leading to the school empowerment on Fiscal Management with the school Principal still Mr. Cresenciano C. Salinas Jr. This was been approved on June 11, 1999. During this time, the school was a recipient of SEDIP and DPWH buildings. In 2008-2009 the school was managed by the Principal Irenea R. Delos Santos, year after Mr. Ronald Martinote led the school.
