It had been a long time that there was just a lone public secondary school in Camalaniugan, the Camalaniugan National High School. Considering the distance of the school from the villages across the river and the economic status of the learner-residents there, education for them was quite elusive. Something had to be done. Someone had to have a heart for them. Thank God, someone took the initiative.
Camalaniugan is primarily an agricultural community. Despite that, there was no Agricultural School in the Municipality during those times. It was for this reason that the late Congressman Domingo A. Tuazon of the First District province of Cagayan sponsored a bill. It was enacted into a law, RA 7018 creating/establishing Felipe Tuzon Agricultural School.
That was how Felipe Tuzon Agricultural School came to being.
The school formally opened on June 04, 1994 at Bantay, Camalaniugan, Cagayan. The site was supposed to be at the western side of the Cagayan River to cater to the youth of the four (4) Barangays there. However, amid the economic difficulties and the presence of lawless elements during those years, the Local Government Unit of Camalaniugan found a safer place for the establishment of the school. They decided to put it up at Barangay Bantay, Camalaniugan, Cagayan. The first building then was beautifully perched by the hillside, overlooking some agricultural lands nearby.
The late Mr. Leandro A. Bacuyag, the principal of Camalaniugan National High School was designated as the pioneer Officer In- Charge of the school. He was tasked to recruit teachers. He also supervised the construction of a two (2) classroom building. After a brief management, the Regional Director of the Department of Education, Culture and Sports of Region 2 designated Mr. Dionicio Bautista as the Officer In-Charge replacing Mr. Leandro C. Bacuyag because of so many concerns as a full- pledged principal of CNHS. Mr. Dionicio Bautista took over as the Officer In-Charge.
During the first year of operation of the school, there were thirteen pioneering students who enrolled. Seven (7) of them were boys and six (6) were girls. Mr. Dionicio Bautista’s length of service as the school’s Officer In-Charge was short-lived. He was appointed as the Vocational School Administrator of Jones Rural School, in Jones, Isabela on November 01, 1996.
Mr. Reynon C. Daguro, one of the pioneering teachers, was designated by DepEd Region 02 as the Teacher In-Charge. He served as such until 2017. During his time, the school population started to increase each year until such time that there was not enough space for everybody anymore. The two classrooms could no longer accommodate the students coming from its feeder barangays namely Bantay, Dugo and Fusina. Additional classrooms were built then to cater to the need of that time. The lone two-room building became four, with two rooms each respectively. More teachers were also requested from the Division Office. And since then also, the school parameter was beautified, attracting more students to enroll.
Since the school had more than a hundred students already, it was harder to manage them especially if there were school meetings, programs or other activities. They still had to put up temporary shed wherein they could conduct school activities or recognition/graduation programs. It was for this reason that they decided to build a Multi-purpose hall. Not only that, thru the initiative of the Local Government Unit, headed by the father of the town of Camalaniugan, Hon. Mayor Isidro T. Cabaddu, a mini gymnasium was constructed. Programs and activities were a lot more convenient and fun since then.
It was in the same year that another building was established in response to the implementation of the Senior High School Curriculum under the K-12 Program. The Senior High School Building houses classrooms for Grade 11 and 12, a stockroom for agricultural machineries, tools, and other equipment and a computer laboratory.
The Senior High School department of FTAS offered Agri-Crop Production under the Tech-Voc Track, Agri-Fishery Arts Strand during its first year of operation up to this time. However, the school aspires to offer more strand options in the future. Though the department had a very humble beginning, with only 10 students during the pioneering year, it cannot be denied that the school has been performing well. Yes, the SHS department has 100% rating in the assessment for National Certificate II for two consecutive years despite the different inadequacies in many aspects like number of teachers, lack of machineries and even laboratory field.
In the year 2017, there was a reshuffling of principals and school heads in the whole division under a new administration. Mr. Jeremias M. Siriban Jr., Ph. D. was assigned in FTAS while Mr. Daguro was assigned in Camalaniugan National High School-Catotoran Annex.
The new School Head became officially part of the whole FTAS family on August 2017. During his administration, that is from August 2017 up to the present, he has always been emphasizing the importance of cleanliness in the school vicinity and discipline among students. He has also been reminding students to prioritize their studies over anything else.
During his first year as School Head, the number of students increased. And this is because he, together with the teachers and some students, go from one school to another to campaign for the school. There are also notable changes in the physical environment of the school. The stage of the mini gymnasium was enhanced and beautified. Some of the buildings were repaired and repainted. The school landscapes were improved. Information boards were updated. More vibrant colors can be seen around. He also initiated the competition on cleanest and best decorated room which encouraged the teachers and students to maintain the cleanliness of their respective rooms.
Moreover, the water system is functional. Not only that, there is also a pump well where students can get water from incase the water system malfunctions.
As of now, the school expects more students to enroll both in the Junior and Senior High School Department. The PTA, school staff, and the student body give their best to work hand in hand for the welfare of the school.
