The CORDOVA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL started its operation in 1972 through cooperative efforts of the barangay officials together with the people of Amulung West, Cagayan under the dynamic leadership of Hon. Rodolfo Martirez Morales, the Municipal Mayor at that time. With their desire to provide higher education opportunities in this area, they started with a survey of the potential student population. There was six room pre- fab Marcos Type building allotted to the Elementary School in Nabbialan, Amulung, Cagayan but because there was no vacant lot to construct the building, proper representation was made to the Schools Division Superintendent that said building be put up in the Municipal lot of Cordova which is reserved to be the site of Cordova Barangay High School.
The Barangay Captains who have contributed to the realization of a long awaited dream to establish a Barangay High School in Cordova, Amulung were the following; namely Faustino Gangob of Annabuculan, Miguel Beran of Alitungtung, Eleuterio Verbo of Agguirit, Paulino Antonio of Bauan, Jose Medrano of Bayabat, Jose Pena of Bacring, Lauriano Anciado of Baccuit, Pastor Supnad of Caratacat, Bernardino Morgado of Casingsingsingan Norte, Alejandro Balinoyos of Casingsingan Sur, Gabriel Batara of Catarauan, Teofilo Arganosa of Dafunganay, Wilson Canapi of Goran, Crisogono Manaligod of Nangalasauan, Hilario Garcia of Nabbialan, Florencio Paat of Nanuccauan, Froilan Mamanao of Tana, Maria Echavari of Pacac Grande, Jaime Remudaro of Palacu, Tomas Gannaban of Palayag, Hipolito Cielos of Pacac Pequeno, Ilustre Catuiran of Logung, Sotero Matammu of Unag, Mariano Canapi of Calintaan, Pacifico of Abolo, Florendo Cabarong of Annafatan, Paterno Clemente of Nagsabaran, Alfredo Saquing of Masical, and Deogracias Andres of Balauini.
On February 15, 1972, the Municipal Council of Amulung adopted Resolution No. 13 which was signed by Honorable Mayor Rodolfo M. Morales, Vice Mayor Juan Malamug and Councilors Juan M. Morales, Anselmo Lim, Juan Castillo, Jaime Pascual, Nicanor Carag, Nestor Tejano, Rizal Guiyab, and Enrique Velasco submitted to the Schools Division Superintendent the late Pedro M. Aguada for its approval.
The High School was formally opened in June 1972 with two curriculum levels having an enrollment of thirty- two male and female students in the first year and twenty- seven in the second year. There were four secondary teachers who were employed namely: Mr. Rolando Vargas, Mrs. Linda Belen, Mr. Angel Basa, Miss Zenaida Cabuag now Mrs. Feri with two public elementary school teachers namely: Miss Josefina Callueng and Miss Venancia Aquino being hired on a part time basis. During the School Year 1973 there was a mass lay- off of teacher non- eligibles and they were replaced by teacher eligibles namely: Mrs. Rosalina A. Laab, Ms. Corazon Lumelay and Mrs. Norma A. Castillo. In 1974, Miss Rebecca M. Miguel became Mrs. Carag was assigned as Science Teacher, with Miss Venancia Aquino as the Head Teacher.
The school was well- established with the continued support of the National, Provincial, Municipal, and Barangay Officials including the people of Amulung West. The school was under the supervision of Dr. Rebecca M. Carag and is manned by eight male teachers and nine female teachers with one clerk and one administrative aide.
Due to the rapid increase of enrollment, the then Principal, Mrs. Rebecca M. Carag prepared a Development Plan submitted it to the Department of Education, Culture and Sports, Region 02 and luckily CHS was chosen to be one of the recipients of the Secondary Education Development Program (SEDP) Package out of five schools.
Since one of the requirements to avail of the SEDP package is a 10 hectare lot, Mrs. Carag made representations to the Municipal Government headed by the late Mayor Hon. Juan M. Malamug and requested for a bigger space for the construction of the SEDP Building. The late Mayor designated Hon. SB Nicanor C. de Leon, Hon. SB Leonardo Castro, Hon. SB Joseph Cabarong, Hon. SB Eden Narag and Hon. SB Mariano Canapi as members to work for the survey and titling of the said lot and donated it to Cordova High School for its expansion.
In 1984 Cordova High School gave birth to an Annex which is located at Bayabat, Amulung, Cagayan with 37 male and female students under two teachers namely Mr. Eduardo Felix and Miss Natividad Quequegan.
After 10 years another CHS Annex was established in 1994 by the late Mayor Juan M. Malamug which is situated at Anguiray, Amulung East, Cagayan with an enrolment of 201 male and female students.
With the moral, financial, and other aids given by the national, provincial, municipal, barangay officials and non- government organizations, Cordova High School became one of the best secondary schools in the region and is fully committed to cater to the educational needs of the united people of Amulung West with dynamic School Head, Mr. Nemesio P. Anguluan.
As the school continue to grow different school heads came to manage respectively, Mrs. Ceferina M. Canlas from Solana, Cagayan which was noted by her motherly approach in managing the schoo,l Mrs. Maria Acorda from Enrile, Cagayan who started the realization of the DepEd Computerization Program and enhancing the curriculum by introducing Computer Literacy Sessions to students, Mrs. Corazon A. Camayang of Tuguegarao City who initiated the construction of the school pathway partnered with the school external stakeholders, Mr. Alejandro Cuntapay of Tuguegarao City who was noted for the improvement of sports facilities, Mrs. Maribel S. Arellano of Tuao, Cagayan which was known for her strategies on designing interventions to meet the challenges and problems in the teaching and learning process through research.
Each of them worked and contributed to the improvement of the school during their time. Additional classroom buildings, school gymnasium, school pavement, pathways, covered walk, additional basketball and volleyball courts were also constructed. Tiling of some classrooms, school’s office, library, science and canteen laboratories, water facility and school landscaping were also improved.
In terms of academics and sports, Cordova National High school had participated and sent contestants to Municipal, Congressional, Division to National competitions and got places.
The school opened its door for Senior High School program under the Republic Act No. 10533 or the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 on year 2016 offering three SHS tracks: Accountancy and Business Management Track (ABM); Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Track (STEM); and Technology Livelihood and Education Track (TVL) with only two contractual Senior High Teachers, Mr. Arjay Romero and Ms. Lalaine Pascual. Some Junior High School teachers reinforced to get teaching loads to augment the SHS teaching force with Mr. Alejandro Mabazza. Cuntapay as the Secondary School Principal III and SHS Coordinator Lennie Laurente. Lucero and with total Grade 11 enrolment of one hundred eleven (111).The program utilized the school gymnasium as classrooms during the start of its implementation and after a year a new 2 storey building was inaugurated. In the next school years, items came for the program. The school recorded one hundred nine (109) pioneer graduates of the Senior High School for the School Year 2017-2018. For the School Year 2020 - 2021, the Senior High School had 9 permanent teachers, 2 provisionary teachers and SHS Coordinator Ms. Melinda Verzon Miguel and a total Enrollment of two hundred seventy nine (279) with Mr. Jayson Areola Lacbayan, the Principal.
Mr. Jayson A. Lacbayan, Ph.D., CESE from Sto. Nino Cagayan is now working on the conversion of Cordova National High School to Cordova National Agri-Tourism School. He also reactivated and improved the school projects resulting in the acquisition of the School Based - Management (SBM) Level 3.
