History

Barangay Camunatan during the early times, there was a tribal group of Ibanag that was consisted of four (4) family household. This families do not know what barrio is within the Pinacanauan River, then one day one of the tribal group leader called a meeting among the group to form one barrio for them and it was known as “KAMUNATAN”, before the Spaniards whenever they called a meeting, they used the ibanag tribal group as letter courier to all adjacent barangays in their information drive.

Finally, the leader decided to form one barrio and forwarded a resolution to the municipal government for their information and immediate action. The request was approved that the Ibanag tribe can have their barrio called “CAMUNATAN”.

To be specific, the word “KAMU” was derived from the Ibanag tribal word meaning “MAGGAAMU ITTAM”, while the word “NATAN” was derived from the Spanish word meaning “NOTIKA” or “NOTICE”.

Most people spoke ibanag, other are ilocanos and tagalogs celebrating “fiesta” were foods for the visitors are prepared, dances and songs performed accompanied by indigenous musical instruments like guitar.

Roman Catholic made the great number of the religion of the barangay, while some are members of religious sectors such as Methodist, Mormon, Born Again ,Iglesia ni Kristo and Jehova’s Witnesses. Barangay Camunatan is subdivided into three (3) puroks composed of more than two hundred household. It consists of 3 puroks wherein Purok 1 has the most number of households.

The barangay officials together with Ilagan Association of Women (ILAW)and AMA members of the barangay gave their full support in the maintenance of peace and order and in the implementation of the school’s programs and projects. The barangay is situated more or less 5 km from the

city with 64,000 hectares total land area. Bounded on the east by barangay Marana; on the north by barangay San Vicente; on the south by barangay San Felipe; on the west by barangay Guinatan.

Barangay Camunatan is surrounded by agricultural lands which show that most of its residence are farmers with an 88.2% of the total population 1.3 % are fishermen, 1.1 % are businessmen 4.7% are public and private employee. A good number are professionals and work abroad. Majority of the labor force are average-income earners while others are low income earners.

Camunatan Elementary School is also known for providing quality learners because during contested and extra-curricular activities, most of the learners bring home awards for showing excellence in their performances.
