Commemoration of Victory
at Mactan’s Quincentennial Anniversary
by: Valerie M Nogoy
The battle of Mactan was a historical event that took place six centuries ago, in April 27, 1521. It is first known and recorded resistance of the Filipinos against foreign forces who aim to invade and conquer the Philippines.
The Department of Education enjoined its field offices to join the celebration of the 500th Anniversary of the battle of Mactan on April 27, 2021
Calangitan Elementary School teaching staff with the support of our school head Sir Anthony G. Siron participated in the simultaneous flag-raising ceremony. The Philippine Flag was hung and displayed in the school from April 20-27, 2021.
The School Araling Panlipunan Leader Mam Valerie M. Nogoy also participated during the online lectures created by the National Quincentennial Committee
School Disaster Risk Reduction Management
By. Rachelle M. Cabalic
The Philippines frequently experiences seismic and volcanic tremors because it lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, which is an area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean where a large number of earthquakes occur.
For us in academe, it is best to be prepared and ready for all eventualities, because no one can predict when earthquakes will happen. Schools cannot be closed in advance due to earthquakes; neither can we suspend classes, like we do when there’s a storm warning. However, with proper training and advanced planning, everyone in our school community can be prepared to react appropriately during and after the occurrence of an earthquake.
The Department of Education participates in the program of the government in ensuring safety in case an earthquake hits. The National Risk Reduction Management down to the local government conducts the National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill. All schools under the Department of Education participate in this practice. The creation of the School Disaster Risk Management plays an important role in ensuring the safety of the staff, parents, and most importantly the pupils.
Being in the department, it is expected from us that we are ready for any eventualities because we never know when an earthquake will hit. Through proper training, disasters like this can be managed, that is why schools participate in the National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill. This school year is far different from the recent practices because of the pandemic. During the face-to-face classes, earthquake drills are done in school but this time earthquake drills are done at home since children cannot yet go to school because of the pandemic.
There were two earthquake drills that were accomplished this school year. The first quarter NSED was conducted last March 11, 2021, at 2:00 p.m, and the Second quarter NSED was conducted last June 10, 2021, at 9:00 in the morning which was participated by the teachers, staff, parents, and pupils of Calangitan ES. Every earthquake drill we do the “duck, cover, and hold” as the three major practices to keep oneself safe during earthquakes. It is also important to remind pupils to keep calm and not to panic during earthquakes.
Likewise, planning in specific ways on how our school community will respond to an earthquake will help us identify key resources that must be prepared or procured in advance. Proper execution of school drills will also help prevent panic, which might lead to accidents when everyone is overwhelmed with fear during a strong earthquake. Orientation is very important when it comes to the use and administration of first aid kits.
As we live in an area where earthquakes are a frequent occurrence, we have to include earthquake-preparedness in our overall emergency plan.
While earthquakes can never be predicted, being prepared spells the difference for the safety of our students and teachers.
